About The Position

The Building Plans Examiner I (Structural) position at the City of Pompano Beach involves highly responsible technical work in enforcing local, state, and federal building regulations. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalency required.
  • Must secure certification through the Broward County Board of Rules and Appeals.
  • Must secure certification through the Florida Building Code Administrators and Inspectors Board.
  • Must be licensed as a Design Professional or Certified Contractor.
  • 10 years of combined construction experience, with 2 years in construction inspections required.
  • 2 years of construction experience in the High Velocity Hurricane Zone required.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Architecture, Engineering, Building Construction, or related field preferred.
  • Valid Florida driver's license required.
  • Ability to acquire FEMA NIMS certification up to level G-400.

  • Knowledge of building construction materials and methods.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and blueprints quickly and accurately.
  • Knowledge of mapping and basic engineering principles.
  • Ability to serve in a lead capacity and delegate work.

Responsibilities

  • Examine new construction and alteration projects for compliance with Florida Building Code.
  • Consult with architects, engineers, contractors, and property owners on building permit applications.
  • Generate permits, calculate fees, and verify contractor competency certification.
  • Attend court hearings as an expert witness regarding building code compliance.
  • Perform mandatory inspections for ongoing or completed work, issuing corrections as necessary.
  • Investigate complaints about code violations and recommend remedial actions.
  • Conduct pre-application and pre-construction meetings.
  • Participate in Rapid Impact/Damage Assessment deployments after storms.
  • Perform after-hours and emergency inspections when required.
  • Maintain service cycle times for examination tasks.
