About the position

The General Bus Transit Garage Mechanic is responsible for performing skilled vehicle maintenance, including troubleshooting, disassembly, repair, assembly, and installation of automotive and diesel engines, transmissions, and various vehicle components. This role ensures the safety and reliability of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA)'s vehicles and equipment, working across various shifts and locations as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Perform basic to complex maintenance work on WMATA vehicles in compliance with established procedures and maintenance standards.
  • Utilize established procedures for operation, installation, maintenance, and repair of WMATA's vehicles and equipment.
  • Conduct major repairs on designated component parts of vehicles and analyze and correct components with special or new problems.
  • Perform major engine work by conducting technical diagnostics to ensure continuity of operations and reliability of parts and equipment.
  • Ensure all tasks conform to safety and maintenance practices and procedures, complying with safety regulations.
  • Use various types of test equipment and specialized tools associated with job assignments, completing required documentation and reports.
  • Respond to and assist in emergencies, securing or safeguarding WMATA vehicles and equipment, and promoting high-quality customer service.
  • Perform tasks that may include heavy physical labor, working various hours, locations, and days as required.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Two (2) years as a Garage Mechanic or related experience for Level D; three (3) years for Level C; four (4) years for Level B; five (5) years for Level A; six (6) years for Level AA.
  • Technical Certification/Licenses in Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) or Military Occupational Specialty code (MOSC) for Military experience in related field.
  • Valid Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL) or CDL Learner's Permit required prior to appointment for Level D new hires; valid Class A CDL required within 90 days of promotion/appointment.
