The Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) position at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center focuses on providing comprehensive pre and postoperative care for cardiac surgical patients. This role involves collaboration with surgical staff and requires a Massachusetts license as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician's Assistant. The position operates on a rotating shift basis, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and patient education in a high-acuity environment.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in all aspects of pre and postoperative care of cardiac surgical patients.
  • Performs and documents preoperative evaluations, including history and physical examinations.
  • Orders and interprets diagnostic tests for patients.
  • Examines and evaluates pre and postoperative patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Writes orders for medications and treatments as needed.
  • Performs invasive procedures such as placement of arterial and central venous lines, insertion of chest tubes, and intubations.
  • Collaborates with staff surgeons and house staff to educate patients and their families about medical care.
  • Works in various units including intensive care units and cardiac surgery stepdown units.
  • Inserts and removes chest tubes, central lines, and arterial lines as directed.
  • Troubleshoots and manages intra-aortic balloon pump catheters and temporary pacing wires.
  • Initiates blood products for hemodynamically unstable patients.

Requirements

  • Master's degree required.
  • License as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician's Assistant in Massachusetts required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications required.
  • 3-5 years of related work experience required, particularly in surgical services.
  • Experience with highly acute patients is necessary.
  • Basic familiarity with computers and web-based applications.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) systems.
