About the position

Mercy Health is a faith-based and patient-focused organization dedicated to enhancing the health and well-being of all individuals through exceptional patient care. The Chaplain II position is integral to this mission, providing spiritual care and emotional support to patients, families, and staff in various contexts, including illness, crisis, loss, and death. The chaplain will work under the direction of the Director of Mission or Director of Spiritual Health and is expected to model the core values of compassion, human dignity, integrity, service, and stewardship. This role requires collaboration with multidisciplinary teams and the ability to address the spiritual and emotional aspects of holistic care.

Responsibilities

  • Recognizes the sacramental needs of the Catholic population.
  • Provides for religious and ritual needs of diverse faith groups.
  • Ministers to a diverse population in a non-proselytizing manner and provides basic emotional and spiritual support to patients, visitors, and fellow associates.
  • Collaborates with team members and the interdisciplinary team, making appropriate referrals.
  • Employs advanced pastoral care and counseling techniques, including emotional processing and facilitation of theological reflections.
  • Provides a specialized perspective at clinical care conferences, addressing spiritual and emotional aspects of care.
  • Conducts full-spectrum spiritual care assessments and care planning processes.
  • Provides spiritual interventions in end-of-life situations and crisis cases.
  • Coordinates delivery of pastoral care resources for complex patient care situations.
  • Provides Advanced Care Planning consultations and elicits care preferences.
  • Communicates clinically relevant information in the Electronic Medical Records (EMR).
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the Ethical and Religious Directives of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Requirements

  • 3 units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) completed (required)
  • Master's degree in related field such as Religious, Divinity, or Theology (required)
  • 1 year of experience as a Chaplain in a healthcare setting (required)
  • Documentation of faith community endorsement reflecting good standing in accordance with the requirements of his/her own faith/spiritual tradition (required)

Nice-to-haves

  • Doctoral degree in Theology or Philosophy (preferred)
  • Completion of lay ministry or ordination process (preferred)
