About the position

The Chemical Engineer - Hydrometallurgy position is a pivotal role within an innovative clean tech company dedicated to transforming mineral processing capabilities for critical minerals. This role is designed for individuals who are passionate about making a meaningful impact in the natural resources sector, particularly in the context of the global Energy Transition. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering novel and sustainable engineering solutions across a battery metals portfolio, which includes battery recycling, lithium, nickel, and manganese. The focus will be on environmental stewardship, safety, and ensuring the longevity of the planet's flora and fauna. In this role, you will lead the scale-up of laboratory processes to pilot and production scales, with an emphasis on improving metal recovery while simultaneously reducing costs and environmental impact. You will be tasked with identifying and mitigating potential process risks, evaluating and enhancing process capabilities, and delivering samples to customers. Additionally, you will conduct process simulations and modeling to predict behavior under various scenarios, develop detailed production guidelines including standard operating procedures (SOPs), and ensure adherence to safety and quality standards. As a technical leader, you will provide mentorship to junior scientists, engineers, and technical staff, guiding the research and development team and external partners in designing and executing experiments for chemical process design. You will oversee the entire chemical process design from concept to scaled production, ensuring quality throughout the process. Your expertise will also be crucial in developing and modeling process designs for scale-up and cost estimation, making you an integral part of the engineering team.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the scale-up of lab processes to pilot and production scales, focusing on improving metal recovery and reducing costs and environmental impact.
  • Identify and mitigate potential process risks.
  • Evaluate and improve process capabilities and control, and deliver samples to customers.
  • Conduct process simulations and modeling to predict behavior under various scenarios.
  • Develop detailed production guidelines, including SOPs, process flow, safety, and quality standards.
  • Troubleshoot and improve product, equipment, and process issues during production.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior scientists, engineers, and technical staff.
  • Guide the R&D team and external partners in designing and executing experiments for chemical process design.
  • Oversee chemical process design from concept to scaled production, ensuring quality throughout.
  • Develop and model process designs for scale-up and cost estimation.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Inorganic Chemistry, Material Science or a related discipline with specific understanding of hydrometallurgy and electrochemical processes.
  • 5-10 years of experience in Chemical Process Engineering.
  • Hands-on experience scaling processes from R&D to production.
  • Expertise in process modelling, utilising Metsim and SysCad for development, control, and scale-up.
  • Executing manufacturing scale-up and verification batches efficiently from bench scale to commercial production environments.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills for cross-functional process improvements.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills for solving complex problems and decision-making.
