About the position

The Chemical Materials Engineer II position at Raytheon involves engaging in chemical analysis and non-metal materials application to support various phases of the product life cycle. The role requires conducting laboratory tests, analyzing materials, and collaborating with engineers and subject matter experts to ensure product quality and compliance with specifications. The candidate will be responsible for managing multiple tasks, documenting results, and communicating findings effectively within a multi-disciplined team.

Responsibilities

  • Assess materials based on conformance to specifications
  • Conduct hands-on testing of materials using a variety of laboratory techniques and instrumentation
  • Conduct standard chemical analysis laboratory testing using various instrumentation including FTIR, SEM-EDS, GC-MS, LC, NMR, TGA, DSC, DMA
  • Develop methods and test plans
  • Lead various characterization and design projects
  • Follow standard written protocols and utilize a variety of databases
  • Review material documentation and assess specifications
  • Engage with subject matter experts and management to understand material usage
  • Provide project status updates to engineers and management
  • Travel to and engage with suppliers to support production efforts and product quality control
  • Document and communicate results and findings

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 2 years of prior relevant experience, or 6+ years of experience in absence of a degree
  • Experience in using standard laboratory equipment (i.e. ovens, thermometers, calipers, and microscope)
  • Experience in Instrumental Analysis techniques (i.e. FTIR, UV-Vis, DSC, DMA, TMA, TGA, Rheology, GCMS, NMR, ICP-OES, HPLC, GPC, SEM, EDS)
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance
  • U.S. citizenship required

Nice-to-haves

  • Equivalent Laboratory Equipment MOS: 68K MOS or 91S MOS in the Army
  • Demonstrated ability to apply analytical chemistry principles to industry applications
  • Understanding of material safety datasheets and Military/Industrial Specifications
  • Specific majors: ACS certified Chemistry degree with strong analytical/instrumentation skills
  • Academic or professional experience with non-metal material design, application, and failure analysis
  • Understanding of Polymer Chemistry
  • Understanding of Systems Engineering
  • Knowledge of data analysis, modeling and simulation, statistics, and various computational techniques for complex multi-variable problems
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, planning and time management skills
  • Demonstrated strong written and verbal scientific communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and complete multi-disciplined scientific based projects including failure analysis investigations
  • Ability to write concise technical reports summarizing analyses
  • Knowledge of STK, MATLAB, or Python
  • MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures
