About the position

The Chemical Engineer at Markem-Imaje plays a crucial role in developing access routes to target products for industrialization. This involves utilizing synthesis schemes developed in research or modifying them as necessary. The engineer will optimize each stage of the process, ensuring that it meets precise quality criteria while maintaining industrial feasibility. This includes considerations for ease of access, reproducibility, hygiene, safety, cost of raw materials, yields, and effluent control, all in compliance with environmental regulations. Unlike research engineers who focus on preparing numerous molecules or products, the Chemical Engineer is dedicated to the development and implementation of stabilized processes that meet key performance indicators (KPIs) such as product cost, quality, and efficiency. In this role, the Chemical Engineer will establish process flow diagrams (IFD/PFD), conduct material and heat balances, and define the nature of materials to be used. They will identify key equipment such as reactors and heat exchangers and define the necessary instrumentation. The engineer must possess a high scientific level to devise and implement alternative solutions to achieve defined objectives, including lead time, quality, and cost. Collaboration is key, as the engineer will work closely with R&D teams to define the bases of industrialization and with production teams to ensure successful implementation. The responsibilities also include conducting the industrialization process, which involves defining, building, starting, and operating the industrial tool. The Chemical Engineer will engage in dialogue with researchers to establish reaction conditions, select process diagrams, and determine whether a piloting phase is necessary before moving to implementation engineering. They will create piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID) and specification sheets for equipment, ensuring that the production tool meets reliability, economic, safety, and environmental criteria. Additionally, the engineer will contribute to cost price calculations for manufactured products, which are essential for determining project profitability based on sales volume. They will identify and collaborate with external vendors to apply existing and developing concepts to Markem-Imaje products and manage the rollout of new processes from CAPEX approval to production handover. A commitment to safety is paramount, as the engineer will work with potentially hazardous materials and must adhere to established company rules and regulations. Continuous education through courses, lectures, and seminars is also encouraged to stay updated in the field.

Responsibilities

  • Establish process IFD/PFD (Industrial/Process Flow Diagram) and material and heat balances (enthalpy balance).
  • Define the nature of materials to be used and identify main equipment (reactor, heat exchangers, etc.).
  • Collaborate with R&D teams to define industrialization bases and with production teams for implementation.
  • Conduct industrialization processes including defining, building, starting, and operating the industrial tool.
  • Select reaction conditions (catalyst, temperature, pressure) and raw materials/solvents for processes.
  • Create P&ID (Piping and Instrumentation Diagram) and specification sheets for equipment.
  • Contribute to cost price calculations for manufactured products to determine project profitability.
  • Identify and work with external vendors to apply concepts to Markem-Imaje products.
  • Manage new processes rollout from CAPEX approval to production handover.
  • Ensure safety while working with potentially dangerous materials and follow company regulations.

Requirements

  • Engineering degree in chemical engineering with a minimum of 10 years' experience in industrial process engineering in the chemical industry.
  • Successful development of manufacturing automated processes.
  • Experience in project management with cross-functional/global teams or external suppliers/partners.
  • Familiarity with methodologies such as Six Sigma, Lean, DFM/DFA, PFMEA, DOE, etc.
  • Strong analytical skills and experience in solving complex problems.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with international travel for project management (20-25%).
  • Knowledge of environmental regulations and compliance.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and total rewards package.
  • Opportunities for continuous education and professional development.
  • Collaborative work environment with a focus on safety and ethical standards.
