About the position

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will play a pivotal role in shaping the financial strategy of an employee-owned design firm that is committed to excellence in design and creating a positive workplace culture. This position requires a strategic thinker who can balance immediate financial goals with long-term organizational objectives. The CFO will work closely with the President and the leadership team to determine the strategic business direction, financing, and investments that are essential for the future performance and health of the organization. As a steward of the organization, the CFO will collaborate with team leaders to allocate financial resources effectively, ensuring that investments drive the greatest return on investment (ROI) in support of the company’s mission. In this role, the CFO will lead a high-performing team across accounting, finance, risk management, legal, and information technology. The CFO will be responsible for developing and implementing a financial strategy that aligns with the company’s overall mission and objectives. This includes utilizing financial planning, analysis, and forecasting models to identify growth opportunities and maintain a deep understanding of the company’s financial position and industry trends. The CFO will proactively communicate the company’s financial strategy and performance to stakeholders, including executives and external partners, ensuring that business decisions are grounded in sound financial criteria. The CFO will also manage the capital structure to ensure optimal leverage of financial resources, including cash flow, debt, and financing. Compliance with financial reporting requirements, tax laws, and accounting standards will be a critical aspect of this role, as will the maintenance of internal controls and oversight of financial report preparation. Additionally, the CFO will leverage technology to drive continuous improvement and efficiency within the organization, enhancing the quality of performance for both customers and employees.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a financial strategy that aligns with the company's overall mission and objectives.
  • Maintain a deep understanding of the company's financial position and industry trends to anticipate and manage risks.
  • Proactively communicate the company's financial strategy and performance to stakeholders, including executives and the leadership team.
  • Provide analytics and insights to support the President and Management Team in business decision-making.
  • Enhance processes to define key business levers, optimal targets, and performance metrics through a balanced scorecard or KPI framework.
  • Manage capital structure ensuring optimal leverage of financial resources, including cash flow, debt, and financing.
  • Ensure compliance with all financial reporting requirements, including tax laws and accounting standards.
  • Leverage technology platforms to drive continuous improvement and efficiency.
  • Lead and retain high-performance finance/accounting, risk management, and technology teams.
  • Invest in the professional growth of the team through mentorship and development opportunities.
  • Build long-term relationships with auditors, banks, insurance carriers, and other external vendors.

Requirements

  • Broad leadership experience in financial strategy, capital management, FP&A, risk management, compliance, and accounting in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to identify key business drivers and develop strategic initiatives.
  • Proven success in attracting, retaining, and developing high-performance teams.
  • Expertise in leading operational excellence and enterprise-wide technology solutions.
  • Experience in privately held companies, professional services, engineering, architectural design, construction, or related industries.
  • Financial leadership experience in an Employee-Owned (ESOP) company or experience with company valuation and stock grants is preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in finance, business, accounting, or related field; MBA, CMA, or CPA preferred.
