About the position

The Child Protective Services Worker (Social Service Specialist 1) position at the Oregon Department of Human Services is a vital role focused on ensuring the safety and well-being of children and families in Oregon. This bilingual position requires proficiency in both English and Spanish, as the worker will engage with diverse populations to conduct assessments, develop service plans, and connect families with necessary resources. The role emphasizes equity and culturally relevant practices, aiming to support vulnerable children and families through a comprehensive child welfare program.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to assigned referrals of abuse and neglect and conduct assessments to determine if children are unsafe.
  • Interview children, parents, and collateral contacts, and observe the home environment to gather information.
  • Make determinations of abuse or neglect and take protective action when necessary.
  • Develop service plans to address the individual needs of children and families.
  • Arrange medical evaluations, substitute care placements, and connect families with community resources and support programs.
  • Complete necessary documentation in OR-Kids, including court reports, safety plans, and assessment evaluations.
  • Attend Multi-Disciplinary Team meetings related to CPS assessments.
  • Attend court hearings related to CPS assessments.

Requirements

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English.
  • A bachelor's degree in human services or a related field, or a bachelor's degree unrelated to human services with relevant experience or coursework.
  • Experience in human services, including crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and behavior management.
  • Knowledge of child development and trauma impact.
  • Experience using critical thinking skills to make quick decisions while maintaining professionalism.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Experience applying trauma-informed, equitable, and antiracist practices.

  • Experience working closely with families to mentor and empower them.
