Clinical Ethicist

About the position

The Clinical Ethicist at Sutter Health is responsible for managing bioethics-related issues within designated hospitals. This role involves providing expert analysis on ethical dilemmas, conducting ethics consultations, and advising healthcare providers, patients, and families on ethical inquiries. The Clinical Ethicist also plays a key role in educating staff on best practices for ethical conflicts, developing and implementing ethics-related policies, and engaging in preventive ethics to resolve conflicts proactively.

Responsibilities

• Manage all bioethics-related issues at designated hospitals.
• Provide expert analysis on ethical issues.
• Receive and conduct requests for ethics consultations.
• Execute consultations and follow up with patient cases after referral.
• Advise on ethics inquiries from physicians, staff, patients, and families using the Sutter Health standardized ethics model.
• Educate healthcare providers on best practices for dealing with ethical conflicts in patient care.
• Train hospital ethics committees.
• Develop ethics-related policies and assist with their implementation.
• Engage in preventive ethics to proactively deal with conflicts and resolutions.
• Participate in ethics rounds and lectures at Sutter Health ethics educational events.

Requirements

• Doctorate in Ethics, Doctor of Medicine (MD), or related area.
• Demonstrated knowledge of principles, concepts, and methods of healthcare ethics consultation and bioethics.
• Knowledge of biomedical ethics terms and literature, professional standards, and methods of case analysis.
• Basic understanding of medical terminology.
• Knowledge of California healthcare law.
• Demonstrated experience with conflict resolution in complex ethical patient care issues.
• Knowledge of Joint Commission standards.
