This facility specializes in machining the largest and most complex structures made from carbon fiber composites and aluminum, specifically for the aerospace and space exploration markets. The position of CNC Machine Programmer is located on-site in Layton, Utah. As an NC Programmer, the individual will be responsible for planning machining sequences and fixturing for 3-5 axis machine tools. Key responsibilities include determining methods, cutter types, and cutting parameters based on various materials and design specifications. The programmer will design 3-D computer models, drawings, and specifications for the fabrication of fixturing elements, and create tool paths using Unigraphics CAD/CAM software, preferably Siemens NX. Collaboration with process engineers is essential to ensure that quality and design objectives are met, and the programmer will also create shop documentation that complies with ISO 9000 standards. In addition to these responsibilities, the NC Programmer will analyze laser-tracking data to ensure quality setups, work closely with machinists to follow setup and machining procedures, and perform tool path verification using Vericut software. A general knowledge of standard G-Code language, machine offsets, and part location is required, along with the ability to set up and operate various equipment including CNC and manual mills, lathes, drill presses, grinders, waterjets, and band saws. The role demands a keen attention to detail and quality, as well as the ability to read and understand engineering drawings and geometric dimensioning & tolerancing. The incumbent must also demonstrate cooperative behavior with colleagues and supervisors, especially under pressure and when meeting multiple deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Plan machining sequences and fixturing for 3-5 axis machine tools.
  • Determine methods, cutter types, and cutting parameters based on materials and design specifications.
  • Design 3-D computer models, drawings, and specifications for fabrication of fixturing elements.
  • Create 3-5 axis tool paths utilizing Unigraphics CAD/CAM software, preferably Siemens NX.
  • Provide input in production tracking software.
  • Collaborate with process engineers on planning manufacturing processes to ensure quality and design objectives are achieved.
  • Create shop documentation for machine setup complying with ISO 9000 standards.
  • Analyze laser-tracking data to assure quality of the setup when applicable.
  • Work with machinists to ensure setup and machining procedures are followed.
  • Perform tool path verification using Vericut software.
  • Set up and operate CNC and manual mills, lathes, drill presses, grinders, waterjets, and band saws.
  • Read and understand engineering drawings, geometric dimensioning & tolerancing, and work orders.
  • Accurately use precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, etc.) and work to tight tolerances.
  • Visually inspect and deburr parts.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; college level or trade school education preferred.
  • One or more years of experience in a related field may substitute for education.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Experience with CNC programming and CAM programming.
  • Knowledge of precision measuring instruments and ability to work to tight tolerances.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Unigraphics CAD/CAM software, preferably Siemens NX.
  • Familiarity with ISO 9000 standards.
  • Knowledge of standard G-Code language.
