As a CNC Machinist Setup/Operator at HORSBURGH & SCOTT, you will play a crucial role in the production of large industrial gears and gear parts. Utilizing advanced machinery such as the Fellows 65-16 Shaper with full CNC controls, Giddings & Lewis VTC 2000 vertical turning, and various Gleason-Pfauter hobbers and grinders, you will ensure that all products meet precise specifications. Your responsibilities will include setting up and operating Boring Mills, Lathes, Hobbing, and Grinding Machines, all while adhering to specific tolerances and quality standards. You will be expected to operate controls, set offsets, edit programs, and perform self-inspection of parts both in-process and upon completion. Additionally, you will be required to use large overhead cranes and other equipment to handle large workpieces effectively. In this position, you will be responsible for interpreting blueprints and specifications, calculating cutting paths, and determining the appropriate feed rates and material removal amounts. You will select the necessary tools and materials for each job, plan the sequence of operations, and ensure that workpieces are properly lubricated and cooled during machining. Monitoring the accuracy of cuts and making adjustments as needed will be essential to your role. You will also be expected to produce large quantities of parts while maintaining high standards of quality and precision. To succeed in this role, you will need a strong background in CNC machining, particularly with horizontal boring mills, lathes, and grinders. Your ability to read blueprints and understand geometric tolerancing will be critical. You should also possess a solid understanding of metal properties and cutting tools, as well as the ability to perform setups and measure parts accurately. A positive attitude, dependability, and the ability to work independently in a large manufacturing environment are essential traits for this position.
