About the position

A Mill and Lathe Machine Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining milling and lathe machines to produce precision parts and components. This role is crucial in ensuring that the machines function efficiently, monitoring the production process, and making necessary adjustments to maintain quality and productivity. The operator must be skilled in interpreting engineering drawings and blueprints, as well as adhering to safety protocols to prevent accidents and injuries while operating the machines. The operator will also be responsible for maintaining production logs and collaborating with team members to meet production goals. The operator will set up and prepare milling and lathe machines by selecting the appropriate cutting tools, work pieces, and machine settings. This includes loading materials and securing them in the machine. They will operate the machines to perform cutting, shaping, and machining tasks on various materials such as metal, plastic, and composite materials. Quality control is a significant part of the job, as the operator must monitor the machining process to ensure that the finished parts meet the required specifications and quality standards. They will use measuring instruments like calipers, micrometers, and gauges to verify the accuracy of the work. Regular maintenance of cutting tools is essential, including sharpening or replacing them when necessary. The operator must ensure that the machines are well-maintained and report any issues to the maintenance department. Additionally, they will troubleshoot and make adjustments to the machines when issues arise, such as tool wear or work piece misalignment. The operator's ability to hold tolerances of +/- .0005 or better is critical to the success of the manufacturing process. Overall, the Mill and Lathe Machine Operator plays a vital role in the production of precision parts, requiring a combination of technical expertise, mechanical skills, and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and prepare milling and lathe machines by selecting appropriate cutting tools, work pieces, and machine settings.
  • Operate milling and lathe machines to perform cutting, shaping, and machining tasks on various materials.
  • Monitor the machining process to ensure finished parts meet required specifications and quality standards.
  • Regularly inspect and maintain cutting tools, including sharpening or replacing them when necessary.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines to prevent accidents and injuries while operating machines.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications.
  • Troubleshoot and make adjustments to machines when issues arise, such as tool wear or work piece misalignment.
  • Maintain production logs, records, and reports of completed work, including materials used and production times.
  • Coordinate with team members, engineers, and supervisors to meet production goals.

Requirements

  • Must have own tools.
  • Must be able to perform own set-ups.
  • Able to edit programs manually, set origins and offsets.
  • Is able to hold tolerances of +/- .0005 or better.
  • Familiar with print reading and GD&T.
  • Reliable and efficient with a good work ethic.
  • Familiar with HAAS and Matsuura.
  • Able to diagnose/troubleshoot standard manufacturing issues.
  • Proficient with work holding methods.
  • Associates degree in Manufacturing or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 10+ years work experience.
