About the position

The College of Fine Arts and Communication at Towson University invites applications for a tenure-track, 9-month Assistant Professor position in the Department of Dance, beginning in August 2025. This role is designed for individuals who possess a terminal degree and have a depth of technical practice and pedagogical skills in both classical and contemporary ballet. The ideal candidate will have experience teaching advanced, pre-professional dance majors and will be encouraged to bring additional expertise in areas such as dance education, dance history, dance science, dance writing, or dance and film. We are particularly interested in applicants who can contribute diverse cultural and global perspectives and who have a keen interest in innovation, collaboration, and emerging trends in dance performance, choreography, and education. The successful candidate will demonstrate experience in choreography and a committed practice to exploring and advancing these processes through research, supporting the evolving constructs of 21st-century dance. A record of scholarship, whether creative or written, and demonstrated abilities in teaching within higher education are essential for this position. The Assistant Professor will be expected to engage in professional growth and scholarly activity, as well as provide service to the department, college, and university. Additionally, professional and civic service within a community of shared governance is expected, particularly for those with specialties in recognized pedagogies or emerging forms that align with the curricular needs of pre-professional undergraduate dance majors. The Department of Dance at Towson University enjoys a strong national reputation for quality training and is home to a dedicated faculty. The undergraduate program offers a rigorous dance education within a liberal arts context, providing a BFA in performance and choreography, as well as a Dance Education PreK-12 Teacher Concentration. The department also offers a MA in Dance Education, further enhancing its commitment to comprehensive dance education.

Responsibilities

  • Teach a 3/3 course load in required courses for the BFA in dance performance and choreography.
  • Advise and mentor students in their academic and professional development.
  • Engage in professional growth and scholarly activity.
  • Provide service to the department, college, and university.
  • Participate in professional and civic service within a community of shared governance.

Requirements

  • Terminal degree in dance or a related field required.
  • Depth of technical practice and pedagogical skills in classical and contemporary ballet.
  • Experience teaching advanced, pre-professional dance majors.
  • Demonstrated abilities in teaching in higher education.
  • Record of scholarship (creative and/or written).

Nice-to-haves
