About the position

The Commercial Credit Senior Underwriter I, CRE position is a critical role within the Commercial Credit Underwriting Department, responsible for evaluating and determining the credit risks associated with larger and more complex commercial real estate clients. This role requires a comprehensive analysis of financial statements, industry assessments, collateral valuations, and cash flow analyses to ascertain the ability of clients to repay their annual debt service. The underwriter will engage in detailed financial analysis and risk assessment, ensuring that all credit policies are adhered to while promoting a diverse and inclusive environment that reflects the M&T Bank brand. In this position, the underwriter will facilitate the credit needs of customers by underwriting new requests and material modifications, guiding them from the deal screen through to approval. This includes reviewing all pertinent credit and financial information, such as financial statements, tax returns, due diligence reports, and appraisals. The underwriter will also analyze financial information and complete credit analyses for the bank's commercial transactions, providing well-supported risk ratings and identifying potential credit risks and mitigants. The role involves close collaboration with relationship managers and portfolio managers throughout the deal process, ensuring a thorough understanding of the client’s business and the proposed transaction. The underwriter will prepare financial models, cash flow schedules, and conduct sensitivity analyses to support their recommendations. Additionally, the underwriter will present their analyses during credit request discussions and committee presentations, ensuring compliance with the bank's credit policies and operational risk controls. The position requires a proactive approach to client interactions, as well as the ability to work independently with limited supervision. The underwriter will also play a role in training junior or newly hired underwriters, contributing to the overall development of the team.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate the credit needs of customers by underwriting new requests and material modifications from deal screen through approval.
  • Review all pertinent credit and financial information, including financial statements, tax returns, due diligence reports, credit bureaus, appraisals, and industry research.
  • Analyze financial information and complete credit analyses for the Bank's commercial transactions, including independent credit quality assessments and risk ratings.
  • Partner proactively with relationship managers and portfolio managers throughout the deal process.
  • Spread financial statements and prepare financial models to sensitize various conditions impacting the proposed transaction.
  • Attend client/prospect calls with relationship managers to understand the client/prospect and their business.
  • Prepare summaries and present facts regarding credit-worthiness.
  • Assist in structuring loan requests, including suggestions on terms, conditions, controls, collateral, and guarantors.
  • Ensure credit policy compliance by verifying adherence to the Commercial Credit Policy.
  • Present analysis during credit request discussions or committee presentations.
  • Adhere to compliance and operational risk controls in accordance with Company or regulatory standards.
  • Promote an environment that supports diversity and reflects the M&T Bank brand.
  • Maintain internal control standards, including timely implementation of audit points and issues raised by regulators.
  • Complete other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or related discipline with 5 years' experience in commercial credit, public accounting, financial statement preparation/analysis, or other financial analysis.
  • In lieu of a degree, a combined minimum of 9 years' higher education and work experience, including 5 years of experience in commercial credit, public accounting, financial statement preparation/analysis, or other financial analysis.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent analytical ability.
