As a Senior Commercial Lines Field Underwriter, you will be part of a company that operates for the sole benefit of its policyholders and is committed to maintaining the highest levels of service. This fully remote position is designed for individuals located in the Rocky Hill, CT area and surrounding regions, allowing you to contribute to our growth in the Middle Market Commercial Package Marketplace. In this role, you will be assigned a local territory to help develop new business opportunities in Commercial Package, Auto, Workers Compensation, and Umbrella insurance. You will work closely with NJM's sales distribution representatives and agents in the Rocky Hill area to foster business development. Your responsibilities will include ensuring that new and renewal business aligns with NJM's strategic goals, managing the profitability and growth of your assigned book of business, and establishing strong relationships with producers and customers to meet their needs effectively. You will also partner with the Commercial Sales Team to exceed NJM's business growth, profitability, and retention targets, negotiate renewal terms, and ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements. Additionally, you will assist in mentoring and training existing underwriting staff, participate in departmental projects, and perform other duties as assigned. This position requires a service-oriented self-starter with strong communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, and team-building skills, capable of working independently while maintaining a high level of motivation and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Assignment of a local territory to develop Commercial Package new business opportunities along with Auto, Workers Compensation, and Umbrella.
  • Work with NJM sales distribution representatives and agents in the Rocky Hill, CT area to develop business in the territory.
  • Ensure that new and renewal business fits NJM's strategy and that the underwriting process and procedures are aligned.
  • Manage the profitability and growth of an assigned book of business.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with producers and customers to understand their needs and sell products that respond to those needs.
  • Partner with the Commercial Sales Team to exceed NJM's business growth, profitability, and retention targets.
  • Negotiate renewal terms.
  • Comply with all legal and regulatory requirements to ensure obligations are met.
  • Assist in mentoring, training, and development of existing underwriting staff.
  • Participate in department projects and perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Property & Casualty Agent/Producer License is preferred or must be willing to obtain after hire.
  • Must be located in the Rocky Hill, Glastonbury, Meridan Connecticut market (or surrounding area).
  • Bachelor's degree is preferred.
  • Middle Market experience.
  • Experience in underwriting commercial package accounts.
  • Extensive knowledge of Commercial Multi-line Package underwriting with a strong focus on Property and General Liability assessment, controls, rules, guidelines, pricing, rating, and coverage.
  • Umbrella underwriting experience required.
  • Working knowledge of Facultative Reinsurance.
  • Ability to review coverage requests and independently make risk decisions based on company appetite, guidelines, risk characteristics, and levels of authority.
  • Maintains thorough knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, governance, target industry and class trends, emerging market needs, issues, and competition as it relates to Commercial Package.
  • Experience developing broker relationships and a profitable book of business for assigned local territories.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, and team-building skills.
  • Ability to work independently and be detail-oriented to ensure accuracy and quality of underwriting development.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Completion of general insurance courses such as CPCU, AU, ARM, or CIC are a plus.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
