About the position

The Commercial Portfolio Manager at Hancock Whitney plays a crucial role within the Credit Delivery Team, working under the direct supervision of a Portfolio Group Manager, Senior Group Sales Manager, or Market President. This position is integral to managing a diverse portfolio of Wholesale Banking relationships across various industries, including manufacturing, distribution, professional services, and transportation. The primary responsibilities encompass credit analysis, underwriting, and portfolio management, ensuring adherence to bank policies and regulatory guidelines. The role involves managing a loan portfolio that typically includes 20 to 25 relationships with total commitments exceeding $175 million, which may vary by market. In this capacity, the Commercial Portfolio Manager collaborates closely with Relationship Managers (RMs), market leadership, and credit officers to originate, monitor, and grow profitable banking relationships. Key duties include performing due diligence, conducting credit analysis, and preparing credit approval packages for new and existing loans. The manager is responsible for ongoing portfolio management, ensuring compliance with established credit policies and business strategies, and preparing annual reviews to assess financial performance and risk ratings of clients and guarantors. The position also requires effective communication with various internal business partners, engaging them throughout the underwriting and portfolio management processes. The Commercial Portfolio Manager will review third-party due diligence documents, work with legal counsel on loan documentation, and participate in client calls to understand their business needs. Additionally, the role involves identifying cross-sell opportunities for ancillary bank products and participating in community or industry-related activities to enhance the bank's presence and relationships in the market.

Responsibilities

  • Effectively partner with RMs, market leadership, senior management, and credit officers to originate, monitor, maintain, and grow profitable Wholesale Banking relationships.
  • Perform due diligence, credit analysis, underwriting, and prepare credit approval packages for new and existing loans, extensions, modifications, and amendments.
  • Conduct ongoing portfolio management, monitoring, and risk management activities to ensure compliance with established credit policies and procedures.
  • Prepare annual or administrative reviews to assess client and guarantor financial performance and update risk ratings.
  • Communicate effectively with internal business partners throughout the underwriting and portfolio management process.
  • Review third-party prepared due diligence documents and work with outside legal counsel on loan documentation.
  • Participate in client/prospect calls to gain a thorough understanding of their business needs.
  • Assist RMs in preparing due diligence and analysis for new client relationships.
  • Monitor and resolve document exceptions that may arise during the loan process.
  • Conduct industry and market analysis to evaluate client credit capacity and quality.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, or related field is required.
  • 7+ years of experience in credit analysis, underwriting, portfolio management, or relationship management in commercial banking.
  • Credit analysis training or certificate program, with advanced skills in underwriting complex commercial credits.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret business and personal financial statements and federal/state tax returns.
  • Knowledge of loan documentation, loan agreements, and collateral perfection.
  • Understanding of lending policies, procedures, and regulatory guidelines.
  • Ability to multi-task and work under tight timelines with minimal supervision.
  • Strong analytical and financial analysis skills.
