About the position

Tokio Marine HCC - Surety Group is seeking a motivated individual for the entry-level position of Surety Associate Commercial Underwriter at our Los Angeles, CA home office. This role is integral to our team of surety bond underwriters, who service a wide array of commercial surety bonds. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical skills and a keen eye for detail, enabling them to review company information profiles for completeness and accuracy, research company histories, and assess credit worthiness. The position requires a customer service mindset, as the underwriter will be responsible for developing collaborative, service-oriented business relationships with both external customers and internal colleagues. In the first 30 days, the new hire will learn the basics of our company and commercial surety bonds, including our systems and processes, while getting acquainted with team members. Within the first three months, the Associate Commercial Underwriter will begin underwriting California license and permit bonds based on credit scores and credit history. As they progress, they will take on additional responsibilities, including underwriting various types of commercial bonds, including those issued in other states, within the first six months and beyond. This position is cash-sensitive, and an annual background credit check will be conducted.

Responsibilities

  • Review company information profiles for completeness and accuracy.
  • Research company histories and assess credit worthiness.
  • Analyze financial information to understand the past, present, and future of businesses.
  • Develop future opportunities through collaborative, service-minded business relationships.
  • Underwrite California license and permit bonds based on credit scores and credit history.
  • Underwrite additional types of commercial bonds, including bonds issued in other states.

Requirements

  • Prefer a degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field, or equivalent education and/or experience.
  • Facility with using programs and systems to gather information from multiple sources.
  • Good understanding of financial information.
  • Strong analytical skills with a keen eye for accuracy and detail.
  • Customer service mindset, responsive with external customers and internal colleagues.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal interpersonal skills.
  • Curiosity to learn and initiative to do more.
