About the position

The Communications and Marketing Specialist plays a vital role in enhancing communication with the Chatham County community and effectively sharing the positive narratives of Chatham County Government through various public outreach methods. This position is situated within the Chatham County Manager's Office and operates under the general supervision of the Public Information Officer (PIO). The specialist is responsible for managing the County's website, ensuring that it is consistently updated and accurately translated into Spanish. This includes content management for all departments, training users on how to manage website content, and addressing any technical issues that may arise. In addition to website management, the specialist oversees the County's social media channels, which currently include Facebook, Twitter, Nextdoor, LinkedIn, and YouTube. They will collaborate with various County departments to help establish their own social media presence, as approved by the PIO. The role also involves working closely with the Intergovernmental Relations Manager to keep the County Social Media Policy up to date. The specialist will create audio and visual communications, such as podcasts and videos, for both the County website and social media platforms. Photography support for County events is also part of the job, along with providing graphic design assistance to different County departments. The Communications and Marketing Specialist will serve as a backup PIO when the PIO is unavailable due to meetings or other commitments. Additionally, they will participate in the Harris Nuclear Task Force, engaging in regular training and graded exercises to prepare for emergency responses at the Harris Nuclear Plant. The specialist will also assist the PIO with various tasks and projects as needed, contributing to the overall effectiveness of the County's communication efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the County website, ensuring accurate Spanish translation and content management for all departments.
  • Train website content users and respond to technical issues that arise.
  • Manage the County's social media channels including Facebook, Twitter, Nextdoor, LinkedIn, and YouTube.
  • Collaborate with departments to establish their own social media channels as approved by the PIO.
  • Update and maintain the County Social Media Policy in collaboration with the Intergovernmental Relations Manager.
  • Create audio and visual communications such as podcasts and videos for the County website and social media channels.
  • Provide photography support for County events as needed.
  • Offer graphic design support to County departments.
  • Serve as a backup PIO when the PIO is attending meetings or out of the office.
  • Participate in the Harris Nuclear Task Force, engaging in training and exercises for emergency response.
  • Assist the PIO in other tasks and projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with coursework in communications, marketing, public administration, or related fields.
  • Considerable experience in public relations or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Bilingual preferred, especially in Spanish.
  • Thorough knowledge of community, public, and media relations principles and practices.
  • Strong writing and editing skills.
  • General knowledge of the organization and operation of the County and its departments.
  • Familiarity with website content creation and management, with the ability to learn the County website platform.
  • Skill in using computer equipment and video editing tools.
  • Ability to write public information reports and releases.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, especially for complex ideas and sensitive topics.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with County officials, associates, news media, and the public.
