About the position

The Dallas Opera is seeking a Communications Manager who will play a pivotal role in shaping the public relations strategy to enhance the visibility and reputation of the organization. This position is integral to ensuring that The Dallas Opera is recognized as a premier opera company in the United States, serving audiences at the Winspear Opera House and beyond, including through its innovative digital programming. The Communications Manager will work closely with the Director of Marketing, Sales, and Patron Services, and will be responsible for creating and editing various communications to effectively promote the organization to local and regional media. This role requires a creative and collaborative leader who can articulate and advance the mission of The Dallas Opera through strategic media relations and internal communications. The Communications Manager will develop and implement a comprehensive public relations plan aimed at increasing media coverage of The Dallas Opera's productions, fundraising events, and community engagement initiatives. This includes fostering relationships with local and regional media, managing consultant services for national press, and proactively pitching story ideas. The role also involves composing and producing a variety of communications materials, including media releases, newsletters, and annual reports, ensuring that all communications align with the organization's standards and messaging. In addition to media relations, the Communications Manager will oversee the production of program books, manage digital content and social media strategies, and represent The Dallas Opera in public speaking opportunities. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership qualities, creativity, and a commitment to enhancing media coverage and brand awareness. A background in the performing arts or communications, along with a passion for opera and classical music, is essential for success in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and measure the success of an annual comprehensive PR and Media Relations plan.
  • Deepen existing and foster new media relationships with local and regional arts and non-arts media.
  • Manage consultant/contract services for national press as needed.
  • Create and maintain all media lists.
  • Proactively create story ideas and pitch to media.
  • Establish and cultivate collaborative relationships with key partners and stakeholders.
  • Escort media, photographers, and videographers at live performances and rehearsals.
  • Compose, edit, and produce a variety of communications vehicles including media releases and newsletters.
  • Provide regular media and press digests to key stakeholders.
  • Draft and edit speeches and responses for the General Director and CEO.
  • Work with the General Director and CEO to create key messages and talking points.
  • Represent The Dallas Opera in media interviews and public speaking opportunities.
  • Partner on crisis communication planning and response as needed.
  • Establish and maintain company-wide standards for written communications.
  • Work with contract program book publisher to draft layout and produce program books.
  • Manage interviews with artists and sub-contracting writers for articles and program notes.
  • Manage content for digital programs and ensure accuracy of image credits.
  • Lead institutional messaging strategy and content creation for digital platforms.
  • Assist in the co-creation of a social media staff policy and guidelines for engagement.
  • Review, edit, and approve all artist and staff bios.
  • Manage independent contractors, vendors, and interns as needed.
  • Maintain positive relationships with staff, board, artists, and consultants.

Requirements

  • 3-5 years of proven success and related experience in performing arts or communications.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field (Journalism, Communications, Music).
  • Proven expertise in managing media relationships.
  • Strong communication ability, including superb writing and editing skills.
  • Strong classical music background and a passion for opera/classical music.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products and collaborating in a Microsoft Teams environment.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends as required by the company's performance schedule.
