The specialist will be responsible for producing electronic publications, including e-newsletters and email messages, ensuring timely production and delivery according to a defined schedule. The position requires close collaboration with the URMC Communications' Content Hub to convert provided text into electronic layouts using HTML editor software, coordinating proofing, and incorporating content and layout edits before publishing and distributing various communications. In addition to content development, the Communications Specialist I will gather information to create content by attending meetings, interviewing faculty and staff, and reviewing published materials. The role involves developing and writing a variety of content aimed at both internal and external audiences, including online news stories, social media posts, newsletter articles, and more. The work produced will be reviewed by a supervisor or senior team member to ensure quality and adherence to deadlines. The specialist will also serve as the technical lead for various electronic communication channels and platforms, ensuring that content is appropriate for the intended audiences. This includes managing event calendars, digital signage, and intranet sites, as well as assisting with training new users on technical functionalities. The role requires the ability to analyze metrics related to email communications and provide monthly reports on performance. Furthermore, the Communications Specialist I will coordinate publicity efforts, including drafting media pitch letters and interacting with news reporters. The position also supports integrated marketing programs by assisting in the execution of promotional activities and drafting content for various marketing materials. Overall, this role is essential in enhancing the visibility and communication efforts of URMC, contributing to the organization's mission of learning, discovery, healing, and creating a better world.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as primary technical producer for URMC Communications' electronic publications, ensuring on-time production and delivery.
  • Convert provided text into electronic layout via HTML editor software and coordinate proofing and edits.
  • Develop and write a variety of content aimed at internal and external audiences, including online news stories and social media posts.
  • Serve as technical lead for electronic communication channels, ensuring content is appropriate for intended audiences.
  • Provide monthly reports on e-newsletter performance and analyze metrics such as opens and click rates.
  • Coordinate placement of basic news stories in print or broadcast media under supervision.
  • Assist in executing promotional and integrated marketing programs, drafting content for brochures and fliers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, or a related field with writing experience required.
  • 1 year of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in writing and editing content based on target audience.
  • Ability to learn HIPAA privacy rules and manage HIPAA consent authorization process required.
  • Strong organization and project management skills required.
  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communications skills required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in news, feature, or website writing preferred.
