About the position

The Contact Representative (Benefits Coordinator) position at the Department of Health and Human Services is located in the Business Office of the Sisseton Service Unit. The primary purpose of this role is to function as the Alternative Resource Benefits Coordinator, ensuring the identification of patients who are eligible for alternative resources. This position is crucial in assisting clients in navigating the complexities of healthcare benefits and eligibility requirements, particularly for those who may not be directly eligible for services provided by the medical facility. The role involves working closely with clients to understand their needs and provide guidance on available resources, including Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security Insurance, among others. In this position, the incumbent will be responsible for communicating effectively with clients and customers to meet their expectations and provide quality service. This includes making clear and convincing oral presentations, listening to others, and responding appropriately to nonverbal cues. The role requires the ability to analyze information, identify rules and principles that explain facts, and draw accurate conclusions based on the data available. The Contact Representative will also utilize their knowledge gained through formal training and extensive on-the-job experience to advise others on technical issues related to healthcare benefits. The position is full-time and offers a promotion potential to GS-07. It is a permanent appointment with no telework eligibility and requires occasional travel. The selected candidate will need to pass a pre-employment examination and may be subject to a probationary period. U.S. Citizenship is required, and the position is covered by Public Law 101-630, which mandates specific background checks due to the nature of the work involving contact with Indian children.

Responsibilities

  • Identify patients eligible for alternative resources and assist them in applying for these resources.
  • Communicate effectively with clients to understand their needs and provide appropriate guidance on healthcare benefits.
  • Analyze information related to healthcare eligibility requirements and make accurate inferences or conclusions.
  • Provide group education in public settings regarding healthcare benefits and eligibility.
  • Maintain productivity reports and ensure compliance with healthcare laws and regulations.

Requirements

  • Must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in the Federal service, demonstrating knowledge of eligibility requirements for healthcare benefits.
  • Experience in interviewing clients for information and advising customers on various health care benefits and eligibility based on current healthcare laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security Insurance, and other similar resources to assist patients in applying for alternative resources.
