About the position

Old Republic Surety Company (ORSC) is currently seeking a Contract Surety Underwriter to join its Underwriting Team at our Dallas, TX branch. ORSC ranks among the nation's top underwriters of contractors' performance and payment bonds, miscellaneous surety, and commercial fidelity, offering thousands of types of bonds. In general, under the guidance of a marketing and/or underwriting manager, the Contract Surety Underwriter analyzes all relevant information on bond renewals and submissions and underwrites within authority limit or recommends underwriting decisions to the manager. Essential duties for the role include underwriting bonds within authority limit, and/or making underwriting recommendations to management that will contribute to the Company profitability objective. The underwriter will develop and apply financial analysis and underwriting skills which lead to acceptable loss ratio objectives, demonstrating proficiency in applying Company underwriting procedures and policies. The role also involves regular travel within the assigned territory using various modes of transportation, including personal, rental, and/or company-provided vehicles, public transportation, and airplanes. This travel includes attending agency visits to maintain current business and/or obtain additional business, participating in industry-specific events, and meeting with prospective business partners. The underwriter will develop and maintain rapport with agency plant and service agents to enhance marketing efforts and collaborate with other Company employees to promote efficient and effective underwriting services to agents. Additionally, the underwriter will enter information and maintain the agency database utilizing Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software to assist in the marketing growth objectives of the respective branch and/or home office, utilizing data to grow business. Other duties may be assigned as necessary.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • Minimum of one year of related experience required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft (MS) Windows and Office products is necessary.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and accurate proofreading skills.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and exercise discretion with confidential information.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to use a variety of office equipment.
