About the position

The Controller is responsible for overseeing the operations of Business Services, including accounts payable, general ledger, and investment accounting. This role involves assisting the VP of Administration & CFO with various projects, managing federal funds, preparing audit schedules, and ensuring compliance with IRS reporting requirements. The Controller plays a critical role in financial reporting, budget preparation, and maintaining accurate financial records for the university.

Responsibilities

  • Assist VP-CFO on projects and serve as a backup for administrative tasks.
  • Work with auditors and prepare audit schedules and confirmations for the audit process.
  • Maintain documentation of the University's Equestrian Inventory and handle IRS reporting for donated horses.
  • Manage all Federal Funds, including Pell Grant and Federal Work Study, ensuring proper record-keeping and audits.
  • Oversee General Ledger accounting activity, month-end and year-end closing procedures.
  • Prepare general ledger budget reports for distribution to department heads and the President.
  • Conduct bank reconciliations for all funds/accounts and maintain cash balance at the bank.
  • Oversee Student Agency accounts and prepare schedules for Federal 990 reporting.
  • Reconcile Endowment accounts and track performance in accordance with the Endowment Investment Policy.
  • Prepare various tax and financial reports as required, including W2's and 1099's.

Requirements

  • Master's degree or bachelor's degree with equivalent work experience required.
  • Missouri Licensed CPA preferred.
  • Prior experience in Higher Education Accounting or related field, with 7+ years of accounting experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of fund accounting or related experience.
