About the position

The Construction Project Accountant at Martinez Steel, LLC is responsible for managing the financial aspects of construction projects from inception to completion. This role requires a strong background in construction accounting, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate will oversee job costing, billing, and financial reporting, ensuring projects adhere to budgetary constraints and financial goals.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor project budgets, costs, and financial performance to ensure adherence to budgetary constraints.
  • Prepare and analyze monthly financial reports, including budget vs. actual variances, cost forecasts, and project profitability.
  • Prepare and submit progress billings to clients, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Review subcontractor invoices for accuracy and compliance with project budgets and timelines.
  • Track accounts receivable and follow up on outstanding invoices to ensure prompt payment.
  • Review and approve project-related expenses, purchase orders, and subcontractor payments.
  • Conduct cost reviews and implement cost-saving measures where possible.
  • Maintain compliance with internal controls and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist in contract preparation and ensure accurate tracking of change orders and amendments.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers to ensure financial data aligns with project progress and goals.
  • Prepare for and participate in internal and external audits.
  • Generate detailed financial reports for management and project stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain accurate project cost reports, tracking committed costs and percentage completion.
  • Investigate unbilled costs and discrepancies to ensure accurate financial reporting.
  • Collaborate with the accounting team on month-end closing processes and ensure timely reporting.
  • Conduct regular financial reviews to identify risks and recommend corrective actions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in construction accounting.
  • Proficient in construction accounting systems.
  • Strong understanding of construction cost controls, job costing, and profit-and-loss accounting.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and familiarity with Microsoft Dynamics.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with ERP systems (1 year preferred).
