About the position

The Career and Technical Education Counselor position at Ector County Independent School District is designed to promote the personal, academic, and social growth of students within the educational setting. The counselor will play a crucial role in increasing students' awareness of occupational opportunities and the training programs available for each. This position requires a comprehensive understanding of the social environment and the ability to develop students' knowledge regarding the opportunities and requirements within it. The counselor will be responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating a guidance program that targets the specific needs of students at the campus level. In addition to direct counseling responsibilities, the counselor will provide resources and training for faculty and staff to enhance the implementation of the guidance program. This includes educating school staff, parents, and the community about the guidance program through public information initiatives. The counselor will assist students in understanding school rules, developing self-discipline, and improving their self-concept. They will also play a key role in the career education program, conducting orientations for new students, and facilitating the transition from elementary to junior high school. The counselor will conduct individual and group counseling sessions, consult with parents, teachers, and administrators to enhance the educational experience, and identify students who may benefit from special programs and services. They will also conduct in-service programs for teachers and administrators, assist in the referral process for students to access special programs, and serve on the Admissions, Review, and Dismissal Committee as appropriate. Maintaining a working knowledge of current trends and issues in education is essential, as is participating in professional development opportunities to meet district requirements. The counselor will also be involved in the planning and evaluation of state and district testing programs, interpreting test results for various stakeholders, and preparing reports as requested by the Director of Guidance and Counseling.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive guidance program targeting identified student needs at the campus.
  • Provide resources and training for faculty and staff to enhance the implementation of the guidance program.
  • Educate the school staff, parents, and the community about the guidance program through a public information program.
  • Assist students in understanding the school rules, developing self-discipline, and improving self-concept.
  • Assist in the implementation of the career education program.
  • Conduct orientation for pupils new to the building including kindergarten pupils.
  • Assist students in the transition from elementary to junior high school.
  • Conduct individual and group counseling sessions.
  • Consult with parents, teachers, administrators and other relevant individuals to enhance the educational experience for students.
  • Assist in identification of students who would benefit from special programs and services.
  • Conduct at least one in-service program in the building for teachers and administrators.
  • Assist in an effective referral process for students to access special programs and services.
  • Serve as a member of the Admissions, Review and Dismissal Committee as appropriate.
  • Provide referrals to community services and agencies as appropriate.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of current trends and issues in education.
  • Enhance professional development by attending appropriate staff development to meet district requirements.
  • Participate in the planning and evaluation of the state and district testing programs.
  • Interpret test results for school personnel, parents, and students.
  • Prepare reports as requested by the Director of Guidance and Counseling.
  • Perform any other duties and tasks assigned.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Counseling or related field.
  • TEA Professional Counselor Certification.
  • 2 years of successful teaching experience (preferred).
