About the position

The Criminal Investigation (CI) Division of the IRS employs Special Agents (SAs) who are sworn federal law enforcement officers responsible for investigating financial crimes across the United States and its territories. This role combines accounting expertise with law enforcement skills to tackle a variety of complex financial crimes, including tax fraud, public corruption, cybercrimes, and more. Special Agents are tasked with planning and conducting investigations, often involving intricate financial records and legal questions, while also engaging in various enforcement duties such as testifying in court and conducting surveillance.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and conduct investigations related to criminal statutes of tax administration and financial crimes.
  • Utilize indirect accounting methods to establish evidence in investigations.
  • Address complex accounting problems and legal questions during investigations.
  • Gather information from diverse sources across the country to support investigations.
  • Analyze interrelationships of facts and evidence from various entities involved in investigations.
  • Testify as a government witness in court proceedings.
  • Assist U.S. Attorneys in preparing cases for trial.
  • Conduct collateral inquiries and provide protection to persons and property.
  • Evaluate and recommend actions on information to identify areas of noncompliance.
  • Serve as a team leader or expert consultant in information gathering functions.
  • Conduct surveillance, armed escorts, and undercover operations as needed.

Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GL-05 grade level in federal service, related to the investigation of criminal violations.
  • Experience must include collecting and developing facts and evidence through investigative techniques.
  • Ability to make oral and written reports of investigations and analyze evidence to draw conclusions.
  • Education may substitute for experience, including one year of graduate-level education in accounting or related fields.
  • For GL-09 level, one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GL-07 grade level in federal service is required.

Nice-to-haves
