About the position

The Criminal Investigation (CI) Division of the IRS employs Special Agents (SAs) who are sworn federal law enforcement officers responsible for investigating financial crimes across the United States and its territories. This role combines accounting expertise with law enforcement skills to tackle a variety of financial crimes, including tax fraud, public corruption, cybercrimes, and more. Special Agents are tasked with planning and conducting investigations related to criminal statutes of tax administration and financial crimes, often dealing with complex accounting issues and legal questions.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and conduct investigations related to criminal statutes of tax administration and financial crimes.
  • Utilize indirect accounting methods to establish evidence.
  • Address complex legal or investigative questions.
  • Analyze complex financial records to trace transactions.
  • Testify as a government witness in court.
  • Assist the U.S. Attorney in preparing cases for trial.
  • Conduct collateral inquiries and provide protection to persons and property.
  • Evaluate and recommend actions on information to identify areas of noncompliance.
  • Serve as a team leader or expert consultant in information gathering.
  • Conduct surveillance, armed escorts, and undercover operations.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National and provide proof of U.S. Citizenship.
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation, including a FBI criminal history record check.
  • One year of specialized experience at a GL-05 level in criminal investigations or related fields.
  • Ability to collect, assemble, and develop facts and evidence through investigative techniques.
  • Experience in making oral and written reports of investigations.
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate evidence and draw sound conclusions.
