About the position
The IRS Criminal Investigation (CI) Division is a federal law enforcement agency that investigates financial crimes, including tax fraud, public corruption, cybercrimes, and more. Special Agents (SAs) are sworn officers who utilize their accounting and law enforcement skills to conduct complex investigations across the United States and internationally. This position involves planning and executing investigations related to criminal statutes of tax administration and financial crimes, requiring analytical abilities to trace transactions through intricate financial records.
Responsibilities
- Plan and conduct investigations related to criminal statutes of tax administration and financial crimes.
- Utilize indirect accounting methods to establish evidence.
- Address complex legal or investigative questions and unusual accounting problems.
- Gather information from diverse sources across a wide geographic area.
- Analyze interrelationships of facts and evidence involving multiple entities.
- Testify as a government witness and assist U.S. Attorneys in trial preparations.
- Conduct collateral inquiries and provide protection to persons and property.
- Evaluate and recommend actions on information to identify areas of noncompliance.
- Serve as a team leader or expert consultant in information gathering.
- Conduct surveillance, armed escorts, and undercover operations.
Requirements
- One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GL-05 grade level in federal service, related to criminal investigations.
- Experience in collecting, assembling, and developing facts and evidence through investigative techniques.
- Ability to make oral and written reports of investigations and analyze evidence to draw conclusions.
- Education substitution: One full year of graduate-level education in accounting or related fields, or superior academic achievement in a relevant bachelor's degree.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience in investigating computerized business and accounting systems.
