About the position

The IRS Criminal Investigation (CI) Division is responsible for investigating financial crimes and enforcing tax laws. Special Agents (SAs) are sworn federal law enforcement officers who utilize their accounting and investigative skills to tackle a variety of financial crimes, including tax fraud, public corruption, cybercrimes, and more. This position involves planning and conducting complex investigations, often requiring the analysis of intricate financial records and the interrelationship of various entities. SAs may also engage in surveillance, undercover operations, and provide protection during investigations.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and conduct investigations related to criminal statutes of tax administration and financial crimes.
  • Utilize indirect accounting methods to establish evidence in investigations.
  • Address complex legal and investigative questions that arise during investigations.
  • Gather information from diverse sources across a wide geographic area.
  • Analyze interrelationships of facts and evidence from various entities.
  • Testify as a government witness in court proceedings.
  • Assist U.S. Attorneys in preparing cases for trial.
  • Conduct collateral inquiries and provide protection to persons and property.
  • Evaluate and recommend actions on information to identify areas of noncompliance.
  • Serve as a team leader or expert consultant in information gathering functions.
  • Conduct surveillance, armed escorts, and undercover operations as needed.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National and provide proof of U.S. Citizenship.
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation, including a FBI criminal history record check.
  • One year of specialized experience at a level equivalent to GL-05 in the Federal service, related to criminal investigations.
  • Ability to collect, assemble, and develop facts and evidence through investigative techniques.
  • Experience in making oral and written reports of investigations and analyzing evidence.

Nice-to-haves

  • Graduate level education in accounting or related fields may substitute for experience.
  • Superior Academic Achievement in relevant fields may qualify candidates.
