About the position

The Criminal Investigation (CI) Division of the IRS employs Special Agents (SAs) who are sworn federal law enforcement officers tasked with investigating financial crimes across the United States and its territories. This role combines accounting expertise with law enforcement skills to address a wide range of criminal activities, including tax fraud, public corruption, cybercrimes, and more. Special Agents are recognized for their analytical abilities in tracing complex financial transactions and conducting thorough investigations into criminal violations of tax administration and financial crimes.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and conduct investigations related to criminal statutes of tax administration and financial crimes.
  • Utilize indirect accounting methods to establish evidence in investigations.
  • Address complex legal and investigative questions that arise during investigations.
  • Gather information from diverse sources across various geographic locations.
  • Analyze interrelationships of facts and evidence involving multiple entities and holding companies.
  • Perform investigative and enforcement duties, including testifying as a government witness and assisting U.S. Attorneys in trial preparations.
  • Conduct collateral inquiries and provide protection to persons and property.
  • Evaluate and recommend actions based on information to identify areas of noncompliance.
  • Serve as a team leader or expert consultant in information gathering functions.
  • Conduct surveillance, armed escorts, and undercover operations, including executing search and arrest warrants.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National and provide proof of U.S. Citizenship.
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation, including a FBI criminal history record check.
  • One year of specialized experience at a GL-05 level in criminal investigations or related fields, or equivalent education.
  • Ability to collect, assemble, and develop facts and evidence through investigative techniques.
  • Experience in making oral and written reports of investigations and analyzing evidence to draw conclusions.
  • Physical fitness to perform strenuous duties, including walking, standing, and use of firearms.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in financial investigations or accounting-related fields.
  • Graduate-level education in accounting, finance, or related fields.
