About the position

As a Criminal Investigator (Special Agent) at the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, you will be tasked with conducting complex investigations that span interagency, multi-jurisdictional, international, and inter-organizational inquiries. This role is critical in combatting illicit activities associated with individuals, businesses, employers, criminal organizations, and cyber systems. You will utilize a combination of intelligence, investigative techniques, and legal authorities to conduct thorough investigations into trade, travel, finance, and immigration-related issues. Your work will involve preparing detailed written documentation to support investigations, applying your expert knowledge of trends, laws, and investigative case development, and collaborating with other law enforcement officers and agencies as necessary. In this position, you will be expected to conduct investigations of marked difficulty and responsibility, which may include drug trafficking, human trafficking, alien smuggling, and high technology crimes. You will also be responsible for developing inter-agency cooperation and conducting interviews and interrogations of suspects, witnesses, and informants. The job requires physical strength and stamina due to the nature of the work, which may involve long periods of surveillance, restraining suspects, and carrying heavy equipment. You will be required to work in potentially dangerous and stressful situations, both indoors and outdoors, and must maintain firearm proficiency as part of your duties. This is a full-time permanent position with a competitive salary range and promotion potential.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a Special Agent for interagency, multi-jurisdictional, international, and/or inter-organizational inquiries and investigations.
  • Conduct investigations of marked difficulty and responsibility associated with trade, travel, finance, and immigration.
  • Utilize a combined methodology of intelligence, investigative techniques, and legal authorities to conduct investigations.
  • Apply knowledge of trends, laws, and investigative case development independently or in coordination with other law enforcement officers or agencies.
  • Prepare written documentation utilizing expert knowledge in support of investigations.
  • Conduct interviews and interrogations of suspects, witnesses, and informants.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen to apply for this position.
  • Must successfully pass a background investigation.
  • Must successfully pass a drug screen.
  • Males born after 12/31/59 must certify registration with Selective Service.
  • Current Federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade in the Federal service.
  • Must possess a valid automobile driver's license at the time of appointment.
  • Must be physically, emotionally, and mentally able to perform the duties of the position.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in conducting investigations involving computers, networks, and servers.
  • Knowledge of transnational criminal activities, commercial fraud, and identity fraud.
