About the position

The Customer Service Representative (Human Services Specialist 1) position at the Oregon Department of Human Services is designed for bilingual individuals who are passionate about providing support and resources to Oregonians in need. This role involves working within the Self-Sufficiency Program to assist individuals and families in accessing essential services such as food benefits, cash assistance, and childcare support. The representative will serve as the first point of contact for clients, ensuring a welcoming environment and delivering culturally appropriate services while collaborating with a diverse team.

Responsibilities

  • Provide specialized assistance to individuals and families seeking services.
  • Assist clients in accessing life-changing programs such as SNAP, TANF, and childcare assistance.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for clients entering the office or contacting via phone or online.
  • Support day-to-day office functions, including mail distribution and case transfers.
  • Greet and assist clients through a trauma-informed lens, ensuring respectful and compassionate interactions.
  • Collaborate with team members to rotate tasks and meet the business needs of the office.

Requirements

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English, with proficiency tested as a condition of employment.
  • Two years of experience in a role involving substantial people contact and high volume of paperwork.
  • Experience providing customer service to diverse customers, demonstrating active listening and compassion.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and resolve conflicts with customers.
  • Proficient in computer skills, including Microsoft programs and web-based platforms.
  • Experience using multiple systems for research and tracking customer details.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment with high individual and family contact.
  • Knowledge of community resources and services available to clients.
  • Ability to adapt communication style to diverse audiences.
