About the position

The Data Center Facility Manager at Google plays a crucial role in overseeing the operations of sophisticated electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and HVAC systems within the data center environment. This position requires a blend of technical expertise and management skills to ensure that the facilities operate efficiently and effectively. The manager will be responsible for the daily operations of the data center, which includes monitoring and supporting physical facility conditions, ensuring that heating and cooling systems for air and water are functioning optimally, and managing power supply systems, including generators and UPS systems. The role also involves overseeing electrical distribution and control systems, ensuring that all systems are maintained and repaired as necessary. In this position, you will regularly inspect and maintain various data center systems, including piping and non-critical electrical or mechanical components. You will assist senior technicians by reading blueprints and schematics, conducting tours of the systems, and assessing their operational status. A key aspect of the role is to develop innovative strategies to reduce operational costs while enhancing overall data center efficiency. You will also be responsible for ensuring that environmental and safety standards are consistently met, identifying problems, and making repairs quickly, especially in emergency situations or during abnormal conditions. Managing data center performance issues and outages to minimize recovery time from failures is also a critical responsibility. Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute campus operational budgets and expense forecasting.
  • Manage established budgets and ensure service level agreements (SLAs) with internal teams are met regarding uptime, efficiencies, and costs.
  • Lead efforts to integrate Google-wide strategy and execution with internal and external business partners.
  • Create strategies for cost-effective operations, focusing on total cost of ownership.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking and innovation in addressing traditional data center and emergent challenges.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2 years of experience in critical facilities management, including facility, technical, and team management.
  • Experience working as a facilities manager or chief engineer.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in mission critical systems operations such as power generation, data center, refinery, chip fabrication, or chemical processing.
  • Experience collaborating with other business units to meet company goals and standards.
  • Understanding of operations and maintenance of electrical, control systems, and mechanical systems in a data center environment.
  • Ability to develop and grow team members through coaching, mentoring, and training.
