About the position

Milestone Technologies is seeking a Linux Sys Admin to join our dynamic team in Sunnyvale, California. This role is crucial for the day-to-day operations of our data center, where you will be responsible for deploying, troubleshooting, and repairing systems to ensure our server and storage fleet operates at maximum capacity. As a Linux Sys Admin, you will work closely with the datacenter operations team, interfacing directly to provide hardware repair support and ensure that hardware is validated and returned to the production fleet efficiently. You will be expected to manage your Jira ticket queue, troubleshoot hardware failures, and apply appropriate repair steps. Your role will also involve maintaining and contributing to technical documentation, troubleshooting manuals, and run books to an internal wiki, ensuring that knowledge is shared and accessible within the team. In this position, you will have the opportunity to identify basic code-related problems in the validation process and create tickets for the appropriate teams to implement fixes. You will be expected to communicate extensively with datacenter operations teams, working hand in hand to resolve hardware issues. Your ability to explain complicated hardware issues and configurations will be essential, as will your problem-solving skills, particularly in relation to server, storage, and network hardware. This role requires a detail-oriented and well-organized self-starter who can take ownership of issues and follow them through to resolution. You will also be responsible for mentoring and training DC Operations teams when necessary, contributing to a collaborative and inclusive work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Deploy, troubleshoot, and repair systems operations in the data center.
  • Manage Jira ticket queue and troubleshoot hardware failure issues.
  • Apply appropriate repair steps and validate hardware for production fleet.
  • Communicate extensively with datacenter operations teams to resolve hardware issues.
  • Maintain and contribute to technical documentation and troubleshooting manuals.
  • Identify basic code-related problems and create tickets for fixes.
  • Provide mentoring and training to DC Operations teams.

Requirements

  • Strong hands-on working knowledge of Linux.
  • Working knowledge of Windows administration.
  • Understanding of networking, storage, and server hardware infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with hardware from vendors like Hitachi, Netapp, Arista, Cisco, Brocade, and Supermicro.
  • Computer Science or Computer Hardware Engineering education, or at least five years in the industry.
  • Ability to explain complicated hardware issues and configurations.
  • Fantastic problem-solving skills related to server, storage, and network hardware.
  • Proven experience as a Linux Sysadmin and in a Data Center.
  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented and well-organized self-starter.
  • Ability to take ownership of hardware and software problems and follow them to resolution.
  • Able to safely lift and move a minimum of fifty (50) pounds.

Nice-to-haves

  • Basic knowledge of Storage products such as Flash Array and Flash Blade.
  • Familiarity with Network Fibre Channel, iSCSI, VLANs, NFS, Port Channel Groups.
  • Scripting knowledge in Python or Ansible programming.
  • Familiarity with automated booting in a Linux environment.
  • Familiarity with automation tools, such as Jenkins and Docker.
  • Familiarity with the Google suite of tools, including Sheets and Docs.
  • Previous ticket system exposure.
  • Knowledge of computer applications preferably with Slack, Teams, Jira, Google Workspace, and Microsoft Office Products.
