About the position

The Data Center Technician Apprentice is an entry level position that will work closely with Data Center Technicians to further develop and enhance their knowledge base & skills set. This position will assist in ensuring the operational integrity and regulatory compliance of the data center electrical, mechanical, plumbing, control and fire life safety systems is maintained. This position will also be responsible to effectively carry out the duties and the processes that maximize customer uptime in the most cost-effective way. The Data Center Apprentice is expected to recognize data center problems and ensure they are quickly identified and properly escalated and if possible repaired quickly, provide oversight of contractors to deliver quality services, and that internal customer demands are met. The Data Center Technician Apprentice will develop their skills with hands on work, training, performing requested tasks, assisting in building rounds and maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, monitor, maintain, and respond to abnormal conditions in multiple facility systems, including Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing, Fire Life Safety, and Building Monitoring and Control.
  • Manage mechanical areas of responsibility including data center cooling solutions, chilled water systems, HVAC systems, and humidification systems.
  • Oversee electrical areas of responsibility including electrical/critical power distribution, load bank operations, and UPS systems.
  • Handle plumbing areas of responsibility including water supply piping, fixtures, meters, and internal and roof drain systems.
  • Manage control system areas of responsibility including electrical and mechanical controls systems operations.
  • Ensure fire life safety systems are operational, including wet sprinkler systems and fire detection devices.
  • Work with contractors and consultants for system expansions, corrections, and upgrades.
  • Assist Data Center Technicians to track, document, and complete preventive and predictive maintenance schedules.
  • Ensure data center operates at maximum operational efficiency and recommend new approaches to operations.
  • Assist with management of data floor and back of house mechanical and electrical loading capacity.
  • Perform data trending/tracking and analyze the data.
  • Provide feedback to DCO Engineering on existing standards and processes.
  • Develop technical writing skills for procedures related to maintenance activities.
  • Install hot and cold aisle isolation barriers.
  • Maintain client cages on the data floor.
  • Order, track and restock facility related consumable items and parts.
  • Regular, predictable attendance is essential for satisfactory performance.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Entry level knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems used in a data center environment.
  • Entry level knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, NFPA 72, NFPA 25, and compliance issues.
  • Entry level knowledge in industrial safety best practices.
  • Ability to rapidly learn and use PC based, integrated critical monitoring and control systems.
  • Proficient with Microsoft programs such as Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and high stress, fast paced environment.
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations at the data center.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with verbal, visual and listening skills.
  • Good problem-solving skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Associate of Science in Technology or equivalent education and/or work experience desired.
  • CPR/First Aid and NFPA70E Certification obtained during employment.
  • Possession of an OSHA approved forklift certification or the ability to obtain one after employment.
