About the position

Kastle Systems is a leader in managed security solutions, offering cutting-edge technologies to enhance the safety and security of commercial buildings, residential complexes, and government facilities. We are on a mission to deliver scalable, innovative security services with our powerful tech stack, open platform, and managed service business model. We are looking for a skilled Data Engineer / DBA to join our team in Washington, DC. This is a hybrid role that requires a strong foundation in data engineering, database administration, and a passion for building scalable data architectures. If you are ready to make an impact by driving data strategy and managing complex databases in a fast-paced, 24x7 environment, we want to meet you! As our Data Engineer / DBA, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining Kastle's data infrastructure, ensuring high availability, security, and performance. You will play a key role in both day-to-day database operations and in building the architecture that enables us to leverage our data for business insights and scalable solutions. This is a critical role within the organization, as we are shifting towards modernizing our infrastructure, removing business logic from stored procedures, and expanding our capabilities in data analytics and automation.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and maintain database systems (MS SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and MySQL) for optimal performance, security, and availability.
  • Manage backups, disaster recovery plans, and high availability solutions to ensure system resilience.
  • Ensure data integrity, security, and compliance with relevant regulations (e.g., SOC2, GDPR).
  • Optimize database queries, stored procedures, and indexes for performance tuning and efficient data access.
  • Perform capacity planning and recommend improvements to current systems.
  • Design, implement, and maintain data pipelines to support both operational systems and data analytics platforms.
  • Develop and manage ETL processes to extract, transform, and load data from various sources into our data warehouse and operational databases.
  • Collaborate with software engineering teams to modernize the architecture, ensuring separation of business logic from stored procedures.
  • Work closely with Product Management to understand data needs for product development and feature analytics.
  • Implement best practices for data governance, data quality, and data modeling.
  • Work alongside the DevOps and engineering teams to improve the CI/CD process related to data management and deployment.
  • Drive initiatives to automate repetitive tasks in database administration and data engineering.
  • Participate in the design and implementation of the new architecture, leveraging cloud platforms like MSFT Azure.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve database issues in a 24x7 environment, supporting on-call engineering teams when necessary.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in a combined data engineering and database administration role.
  • Proven experience with MS SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and MySQL.
  • Strong understanding of ETL processes, data warehousing, and data architecture principles.
  • Experience with Azure or similar cloud platforms for database management and data pipeline solutions.
  • Knowledge of DevOps practices (containerization, Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD) and experience collaborating with DevOps teams.
  • Proficiency in performance tuning, query optimization, and index management.
  • Experience with scripting languages (e.g., Python, PowerShell) to automate database tasks.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with NoSQL databases like MongoDB or Redis.
  • Familiarity with KPI dashboards and reporting frameworks for monitoring database performance.
  • Prior experience working in a 24x7 operations environment.
  • Knowledge of security best practices in data management, including encryption, data masking, and access controls.
  • Experience in data migration projects from legacy systems to modern, cloud-based platforms.
