About The Position

The Data Scientist at Western Governors University is responsible for extracting valuable insights from large datasets, utilizing statistical models and machine learning techniques. This role involves collaboration with various departments to enhance data-driven decision-making and improve educational outcomes. The Data Scientist will document analytics needs, translate user stories into technical requirements, and develop predictive models that may be integrated into existing workflows.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related discipline.
  • 3 years of related experience in Data Analysis, Business Intelligence, Data Science, Statistics, or similar fields.
  • Advanced SQL proficiency, including experience with queries, data modification, and performance tuning.
  • Ability to interpret and design models that describe data relationships.
  • Familiarity with versioning tools in CI/CD contexts (e.g., GitHub).
  • Proficiency in using Tableau and Power BI for data presentation.
  • Experience with Python, R, and/or Natural Language Processing in an ML environment.
  • Skilled in A/B Testing and project management methodologies (e.g., Waterfall, Agile).
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite, especially advanced Excel knowledge.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with machine learning operations (MLOps).
  • Knowledge of flowchart and diagramming tools like Miro, Visio, or Lucidchart.

Responsibilities

  • Document data and analytics needs in projects of medium/high complexity with a student and equity-centered lens.
  • Translate user stories into technical requirements.
  • Set and manage expectations about analytics tasks and activities through clear communication with partners and stakeholders.
  • Identify adequate data sources and data sets to evaluate hypotheses and produce forecasts.
  • Analyze large data sets from both structured and unstructured sources and develop statistical and predictive models.
  • Collaborate with Data Engineering in the development of ETL/ELT processes and data pipelines.
  • Identify, investigate, and solve complex data issues, contributing to the accuracy and validity of the university's data.
  • Utilize software, scripts, and algorithms to perform complex data-related tasks without human intervention.
  • Combine data analysis, visualization, and narrative structures to convey information effectively.
  • Select and deploy a variety of mathematical models and forecasting methods to make predictions and identify relationships.
  • Convey information effectively to peers, partners, and senior leaders using various resources and formats.
  • Create and organize information about processes, projects, operations, and insights from analyses.
  • Write and interpret technical documentation related to data models.
  • Contribute actively to the enrichment of the university's data management platforms.
  • Track and report own progress, dependencies, and challenges diligently.
  • Design small-scale solutions and collaborate with other technical specialists in the construction of data products.
  • Understand and abide by relevant policies for data access and usage.
  • Engage in continuous learning and skill improvement.
