About the position

The New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) is dedicated to investing in community-based organizations and programs aimed at alleviating poverty and fostering opportunities for New Yorkers and their communities. The Data Visualization Specialist will play a crucial role in supporting the integration of the Office of Neighborhood Safety within DYCD. This position involves performing applied research and conducting analyses to detect and predict patterns related to safety indicators, such as gun violence. The selected candidate will be responsible for acquiring, cleaning, integrating, analyzing, and interpreting various datasets using tools like ArcGIS, and will report findings to relevant stakeholders as necessary. In this role, the Data Visualization Specialist will be tasked with communicating complex analytical and scientific processes and results to both technical and non-technical audiences. This includes creating and editing visual content such as maps, charts, and graphs, transforming datasets and analyses into compelling visuals that effectively convey insights. The position requires a strong understanding of statistical, analytical, and data visualization software, particularly ArcGIS and SQL tools, as well as a proven track record in conducting quantitative and/or geospatial research. The ability to build consensus and develop solutions for diverse stakeholders is essential, along with a solid understanding of project delivery within City government and knowledge of industry standards and best practices.

Responsibilities

  • Perform applied research and conduct analyses to detect and predict patterns related to safety indicators.
  • Acquire, clean, integrate, analyze, and interpret disparate datasets using ArcGIS.
  • Communicate complex analytical and scientific processes and results to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Create and edit visual content including maps, charts, and graphs.
  • Transform datasets and data analyses into compelling visuals.

Requirements

  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental science, or public health.
  • For Level II and above: A doctorate degree in a relevant field and one year of supervisory, administrative, or research experience, or a master's degree with three years of research experience.
  • At least two years of experience in a relevant field, with the possibility of substituting two years as a City Research Scientist Level I for the required experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Demonstrated expertise in statistical, analytical, and data visualization software, especially ArcGIS and SQL tools.
  • Experience supporting users with data visualization software tools.
  • Solid leadership skills with the ability to build consensus and develop solutions for diverse stakeholders.
  • Good understanding of project delivery within City government.
  • Knowledge of relevant industry standards and best practices.
