About the position

The Deafblind Intervener at Creekside Elementary School is responsible for providing specialized support to a student with deafblindness, ensuring their educational and personal needs are met. This role involves direct interaction with the student, collaboration with educational staff, and facilitating communication and social interactions to promote the student's well-being and development. The position is temporary and tailored to the specific needs of the individual student, requiring a compassionate and skilled approach to education.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct support (1:1) to a student with deafblindness as part of an educational team and as indicated by the student's individualized education plan (IEP).
  • Provide support to the special education teacher, including preparing materials and assisting in the preparation of the IEP.
  • Provide consistent access to instruction and environmental information that is usually gained by typical students through vision and hearing.
  • Assist in the development and use of receptive and expressive communication skills for the student.
  • Assist and escort the student in bus transference and provide supervision in the cafeteria and at recess.
  • Facilitate the development and maintenance of trusting, interactive relationships that promote social and emotional well-being.
  • Maintain student records pertaining to behavior and progress toward IEP goals.
  • Perform personal need duties including bathroom assistance, diapering, feeding, and lifting the individual student as needed.
  • Serve as a resource to other staff on issues related to deafblindness.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience working with special needs children or licensed special education teaching experience.
  • Intermediate knowledge of deafblindness and its impact on learning and development.
  • Intermediate verbal and written communication skills.
  • Advanced interpersonal relations skills.
  • Advanced organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with others.
  • Ability to diffuse and manage volatile and stressful situations.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job.
  • Ability to work one-on-one and in small groups with students.
  • Ability to work with medically fragile or behaviorally intensive children.
  • Ability to provide high levels of patience, compassion, and understanding.
  • Ability to effectively facilitate the deafblind intervener intervention process.
  • Criminal background check and fingerprinting required for hire.

Nice-to-haves

  • Associate's degree or equivalent.
  • Experience working in a school district or educational setting.
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • National Intervener Credential.
  • Colorado Department of Education (CDE) Intervener certification.
  • CPR and First Aid certifications.
  • Basic sign language skills.
  • Basic bilingual skills if working in the English as a Second Language (ESL) Program.
  • Racially conscious and culturally competent with the skill, will, capacity, and knowledge to commit to a culture of continuous improvement.
