About the position

The Decorator position at Brookshire Grocery Company involves utilizing creativity and technical skills to plan and decorate bakery products. This role is essential in assisting with the day-to-day operations of the bakery while promoting excellent customer service. The Decorator will be responsible for preparing, icing, and decorating cakes and other baked goods, ensuring that they meet both aesthetic and quality standards. This position requires a keen eye for detail and the ability to make quick decisions under time pressure, particularly when fulfilling customer requests or during busy periods. In addition to decorating, the Decorator will trace and copy drawings onto cakes using templates or free-hand sketches, blending icing colors, and selecting appropriate decorating materials and tools. Staying current with cake decorating trends and technologies is crucial, as is planning production schedules in conjunction with seasonal events and store promotions. The Decorator will also inspect products for quality and food safety, ensuring compliance with company standards. Customer interaction is a significant part of this role, as the Decorator will greet customers, answer questions, and fulfill requests with a friendly and service-oriented attitude. Maintaining a clean and safe working environment is also a priority, adhering to company safety procedures and promoting product sales through suggestive selling initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares, ices, and decorates cakes and other baked goods for display or customer requests.
  • Traces and copies drawings onto cakes using a template or free-hand sketches.
  • Identifies, matches, and blends icing colors, making judgments regarding colors, texture, aroma, flavor, and taste.
  • Selects appropriate decorating materials and tools to complete requests, making quick decisions under time pressure.
  • Stays current with cake decorating trends, processes, and technology; plans production schedule in conjunction with seasons, store promotions, and community events.
  • Inspects product for satisfactory production and food safety quality according to Company standards.
  • Provides friendly and customer service-oriented attitude by greeting customers, answering questions, and fulfilling customer requests.
  • Maintains a clean, safe, and sanitary working and shopping environment by adhering to Company safety procedures.
  • Promotes product sales through use of suggestive selling initiatives.

Requirements

  • High school Diploma or GED and six or more months of related experience preferred.
  • Minimum of 16 years of age required; must be 18 years of age to operate motorized equipment.
  • Food Handler certification required.
  • Decorator certification desirable.
  • Ability to develop and plan creative designs on baked goods.
  • Ability to use precision hand tools for decorating, carving, sculpting, etc. under supervision.
  • Ability to safely operate and maintain department equipment.
  • Ability to effectively communicate (in written and verbal form) with customers and partners.
  • Ability to work well with fellow partners and promote a team environment.
  • Ability to work flexible schedules including nights, weekends, and holidays.
