About the position

As a Deli Manager at Safeway, you will play a crucial role in delivering exceptional customer service and managing the deli department effectively. Reporting to the Store Director, this position is hourly and bonus eligible, and it requires a commitment to maintaining high standards of food quality and customer satisfaction. You will be responsible for training, scheduling, and supervising deli employees to ensure that the department is adequately staffed and that all operations run smoothly. Your expertise in deli products, including meats, cheeses, salads, and gourmet items, will be essential in preparing delicious foods that keep customers returning to the store. In this dynamic role, you will engage with customers to resolve any issues related to sales or service, ensuring a positive shopping experience. Daily responsibilities include planning production, performing inventory checks, and ordering supplies to maintain adequate stock levels. You will also be involved in preparing hot and cold deli foods, displaying them attractively in the deli cases, and promoting sales through customer engagement and food sampling. Operating food preparation equipment and maintaining compliance with food safety regulations are critical aspects of this position. The Deli Manager must possess strong leadership skills, as you will be expected to motivate your team and ensure that all employees adhere to company policies and procedures. You will also be responsible for maintaining a clean and organized work environment, conducting temperature checks, and ensuring that all products meet quality standards. This position requires the ability to multitask and work efficiently under pressure, as well as a commitment to providing excellent customer service at all times.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality customer service, complying with company standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Train, schedule, and supervise deli employees to ensure proper staffing.
  • Plan daily production, perform inventory, and monitor information on store portal and in-store mailbox.
  • Resolve customer issues related to sales or service in a friendly manner.
  • Perform daily inventory and order necessary supplies to maintain adequate stock levels.
  • Greet customers and take orders in person and over the phone.
  • Prepare hot and cold deli food and display it attractively for sale.
  • Inform customers about deli products and services, providing food samples to promote sales.
  • Operate food preparation equipment, including slicers.
  • Prepare seasonal trays for display or special orders.
  • Use scales and volume measures to ensure accurate product portions.
  • Operate electronic cash registers and handle customer payments accurately.
  • Restock and organize deli cases on the sales floor.
  • Maintain compliance with food safety and sanitation regulations.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated prior customer service skills or related experience.
  • Ability to interact professionally with customers, co-workers, and supervisors.
  • Basic math skills and the ability to read and write in English.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions and complete tasks in a timely manner.
  • Knowledge of products, pricing, sales reports, and department layout.
  • Ability to make quality decisions and work under minimal supervision.
  • Ability to multitask while working under stress and time constraints.
  • Must pass food safety tests and other required tests by Safeway.
  • Must be at least 18 years old and able to operate deli equipment.
