About the position

The Dental Assistant in the Division of Pediatric Dentistry at Penn Dental Medicine is responsible for providing chairside assistance and clinical support to dental students. This role involves preparing patients for treatment, assisting in various dental procedures, and ensuring a safe and clean working environment. The position requires strong communication skills and a commitment to patient care, as well as flexibility in scheduling to meet operational needs.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare patients for dental treatment by welcoming, comforting, seating, and obtaining medical history and patient vitals.
  • Document dental care services by charting in patient records.
  • Provide materials by selecting, mixing, and placing materials on instruments and in the patient's mouth.
  • Make appropriate study models on indicated patients.
  • Expose, process, and mount necessary x-rays.
  • Provide diagnostic information by exposing and developing radiographic studies; pouring, trimming, and polishing study casts.
  • Maintain patient appearance and ability to masticate by fabricating temporary restorations; cleaning and polishing removable appliances.
  • Aid in chairside assistance as needed.
  • Educate and motivate patients by giving oral hygiene and plaque control instructions, presenting and explaining treatment plans to patients, and providing postoperative instructions.
  • Maintain patient confidence and protect operations by keeping information confidential.
  • Adhere to infection-control policies and protocols to protect patients and employees.
  • Maintain a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Conserve dental resources by using equipment and supplies as needed; monitor inventory and maintain proper usage and operations of equipment.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops and participating in professional societies.

Requirements

  • Technical School, Certification, or training required beyond High School.
  • Minimum of 3 years of practical experience in a dental care facility or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Current CPR certification and BLS required.
  • Must have PA DANB (X-Ray) Certification.
  • Employment clearance through the State of PA to work on/with children.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with AxiUm preferred.
  • Ability to accommodate different scheduling requirements based on operational needs.
