About the position

The Dental Officer Series 0680 position requires applicants to have sufficient experience and/or education to perform the duties of the specific role. Experience can include both paid and unpaid work, including volunteer service through National Service programs. Candidates must clearly identify their duties and responsibilities in previous positions, including total hours worked per week. A positive education requirement is in place, necessitating the submission of transcripts or a detailed education history on the resume. Official transcripts are required after tentative selection. Applicants must hold a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from an accredited institution. There is a provision for applicants who are nearing completion of their degree, allowing them to be tentatively qualified if they provide appropriate documentation. Licensure is mandatory, requiring passage of the National Board of Dental Surgery and a current, unrestricted license to practice dentistry. Medical requirements include the ability to distinguish shades of color. Experience must include evaluation, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of oral diseases and disorders. For GS-12 level consideration, candidates must have completed a 2-year residency or have equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, prevent, diagnose, and treat diseases, injuries, and disorders of the oral cavity and maxillofacial area.
  • Perform dental procedures such as removal of decay, filling cavities, straightening, extracting, and repairing teeth.
  • Treat gum diseases and perform corrective surgery.
  • Make measurements/models for dentures to replace missing teeth.
  • Administer anesthetics and write prescriptions.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from an accredited institution.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice dentistry.
  • Passed the National Board of Dental Surgery.
  • Ability to distinguish shades of color.
  • Experience in evaluating, preventing, diagnosing, and treating oral diseases.

Nice-to-haves

  • Completion of a 2-year residency program in dentistry or related field.
  • At least 2 years of equivalent experience at the GS-11 level.
