About the position

BAE Systems is seeking an experienced lawyer to provide strategic legal support to its Controls and Avionics Solutions (CAS) and Power and Propulsion Systems (PPS) business areas. This role involves advising on a wide range of legal matters, including government contracting, commercial agreements, and regulatory compliance, while working collaboratively in a hybrid environment. The position requires strong leadership skills and the ability to interact with senior business leaders.

Responsibilities

  • Support assigned businesses under the direction of the sector Chief Counsel.
  • Provide legal guidance on a diverse portfolio of products and services in commercial and defense markets.
  • Advise on legal matters including government contracting, commercial agreements, intellectual property, regulatory compliance, export controls, and cybersecurity.
  • Serve as the primary legal partner for design and development centers and manufacturing sites.
  • Support global aftermarket operations.
  • Negotiate complex commercial and government contracts, including those with international partners.
  • Advise on legal implications of emerging technologies and mission-critical systems.
  • Manage legal risks and provide strategic advice on technology transfers, data privacy, and ESG considerations.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support innovation and growth initiatives.
  • Develop and deliver training on contract management, compliance, and risk management.
  • Conduct and manage internal investigations.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate Degree and admission to practice in the United States, preferably in New York.
  • 10 years of applicable experience in an in-house counsel role.
  • Experience in U.S. Government contracts with knowledge of FAR/DFARS and relevant regulations.
  • Experience in international transactions and contracting, including export control regulations.
  • Experience supporting businesses focused on emerging technologies.
  • Experience advising on regulatory compliance in the automotive, aerospace, or defense industries.
  • Strong negotiation and drafting skills for high-value transactions.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for effective interaction with senior leaders.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Minimum of ten years of experience in a law firm government contracts practice or federal contracting in-house environment.
  • Experience in the aerospace, automotive, and defense industry.
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies like aircraft and automotive electrification.
  • Familiarity with international legal environments.
  • Ability to obtain security clearance, with current active Secret clearance preferred.
