About The Position

The Desert Aquatics Steward position is an AmeriCorps role focused on supporting the Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) efforts to manage and conserve aquatic resources in the California desert. The steward will assist in updating wildlife guzzler inventories, monitoring spring and riparian systems, and collecting hydrological data to support water rights applications. This role is ideal for individuals interested in ecology, hydrology, and environmental conservation, providing hands-on experience in the field while contributing to the health of local ecosystems.

Requirements

  • Must be a member of a Federally recognized Indian Tribe, Band, or Village; or possess at least one-half degree Indian blood from Indigenous Tribes.
  • Valid state driver's license.
  • Ability to withstand rigorous physical conditions and inclement weather, particularly in desert ecosystems.
  • High school diploma or GED or agreement to obtain one before using the education award.
  • Ability to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.

Nice To Haves

  • Studying or interested in ecology, hydrology, aquatics, or environmental science.
  • Ability to operate four-wheel drive vehicles in rough conditions.
  • Experience in data analysis and writing scientific reports.
  • Familiarity with California water rights law and BLM technical protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in updating the wildlife guzzler inventory database and conduct condition assessments.
  • Monitor known spring/riparian systems and identify unknown systems for future monitoring.
  • Collect and analyze hydrological data for water right applications to the State Water Resource Control Board.
  • Conduct field inventory of wildlife guzzlers and assess their condition and use.
  • Update the BLM GIS database of wildlife guzzlers and coordinate with CDFW for data consistency.
  • Conduct photo monitoring and water quality measurements of spring and riparian systems.
  • Locate unknown spring and riparian systems using GIS data and coordinate with stakeholders.
