About the position

The Design Engineer II - Interior Plastics position is a critical role within the automotive design category, focusing on the development of large-scale product programs. The successful candidate will lead and support engineering activities, ensuring that all aspects of product development are thoroughly investigated for feasibility. This includes performing design tasks using advanced 3-D modeling software, conducting layout reviews, and creating 2D drawings. The role requires a proactive approach to developing and maturing assigned components from initial concept through to production, ensuring that all targets for cost, investment, weight, performance, and quality are established and achieved. In this position, the engineer will coordinate engineering designs and systems with various stakeholders, including purchasing, suppliers, testing teams, manufacturing teams, and other vehicle subsystems. A key responsibility will be to ensure the quality of components and/or subsystem 3D CAD and technical drawings. The engineer will also be tasked with analyzing and resolving complex problems with moderate to minimal guidance, utilizing best practices and knowledge of internal or external business issues to enhance product and process efficiency. The role will involve searching for innovative ways to increase overall efficiency, leveraging up-to-date technology, and reducing design and parts costs. Additionally, travel to client sites will be required to support project needs and client interactions.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and support engineering activities for large scale product development programs.
  • Investigate feasibility and perform design using 3-D modeling software.
  • Conduct layout review and create 2D drawings.
  • Develop and mature assigned components from concept through production.
  • Establish and achieve targets for cost, investment, weight, performance, and quality.
  • Coordinate engineering designs and systems with purchasing, suppliers, testing team, manufacturing team, and other vehicle subsystems.
  • Ensure quality of components and/or subsystem 3D CAD and technical drawings.
  • Analyze and resolve complex problems with moderate to minimal guidance.
  • Utilize best practices and knowledge of internal or external business issues to improve product and/or processes.
  • Search for new ways to increase overall efficiency, utilize up-to-date technology, and reduce design and parts costs.
  • Travel to client sites as required.

Requirements

  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Mechanical Technology, Aerospace, Automotive, Manufacturing or related field.
  • 3+ years industry experience developing automotive interior components required.
  • Experience developing automotive interior trim components such as roof lining, pillar trims, lower cabin, ducts, or SUV cargo trims.
  • 3+ years experience using CATIA V5 for 3D modeling and 2D drafting (CATIA V6 preferred).
  • Strong understanding of DFM (Design for Manufacturing) for hard trim (plastics) and/or soft trim required.
  • Ability to interpret CAE results and integrate recommendations into product designs.
  • Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional group setting, providing essential technical guidance to support Senior Management.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office.
