About the position

The Design Engineer - Studies position at Ulteig focuses on supporting power system studies and modeling within the renewable energy sector, specifically for power plant controllers. The role involves working closely with the Plant SCADA team to maintain and update custom plant controller models, conduct dynamic simulations, and ensure compliance with regional requirements. The engineer will also interact with developer clients and system operators to incorporate feedback into the modeling process, emphasizing the fast-paced nature of early-stage interconnection work.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Ulteig Plant SCADA team to understand the power plant controller product designed in-house.
  • Update and maintain custom plant controller models developed in-house using PSSE, PSCAD, and TSAT software packages.
  • Incorporate plant controller models into overall plant models and conduct dynamic simulations to test performance.
  • Tune parameters to meet regional requirements for plant performance.
  • Advise internal teams on implementing plant controller parameters in the field.
  • Collaborate with developer clients and system operators to understand model performance feedback and update models accordingly.
  • Respond quickly to feedback and questions in the fast-paced environment of early-stage interconnection work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 2 years of working experience, with at least 1 year directly related to power systems.
  • Experience with steady-state analysis and/or dynamic analysis utilizing PSSE or PSCAD is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Experience with programming and familiarity with control block diagrams.
  • Analytical, self-motivated, and able to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent presentation and verbal/written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with voltage regulation/plant controllers is preferred.
  • Willingness to learn new software and programming languages independently.
