About the position

The Detention Services Security Officer is responsible for providing building security at various judicial centers in Dakota County, including Hastings, Apple Valley, and Mendota Heights. This role involves assisting detention services deputies, performing security duties in courts, responding to emergencies, and enforcing rules and laws. The position requires working full-time hours, with shifts varying between 8 to 10 hours, Monday through Friday. Candidates must pass a comprehensive background investigation, medical, and drug screening.

Responsibilities

  • Provide building security at the judicial center and other service centers.
  • Assist detention services deputies with specific tasks to improve efficiency.
  • Perform security duties in courts and escort prisoners as needed.
  • Respond to emergencies and enforce rules and laws as directed.
  • Conduct foot patrols and monitor door security.
  • Engage with the public and staff to maintain positive relationships.
  • Observe and report building, health, and safety issues.
  • Monitor activity via security cameras and respond to calls for service.
  • Provide courtroom security and decorum as directed by supervisors.
  • Transport prisoners to the county jail.

Requirements

  • High School Graduation/GED AND two years of full-time work experience from any industry or employer.
  • A combination of post-high school education and full-time work experience totaling two years.
  • A completed 2 or 4-year degree in any field.
  • Ability to work effectively under stressful situations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to lift, carry, or drag objects/people weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Knowledge of State, County, and Federal statutes, rules, and regulations.
  • Ability to deal with inmates, co-workers, and the public fairly and respectfully.
  • Ability to solve varied and diverse problems that require deductive reasoning skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of various medical supplies including an oxygen kit, defibrillator, and tourniquet.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision.
