About the position

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is seeking a skilled Diagnostic Imaging Equipment Biomedical Service Engineer to join our dynamic team. This role is crucial in maintaining and servicing Ionizing and Non-Ionizing Radiation producing equipment across multiple departments, with a significant focus on CT and MRI units. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing maintenance services, performing repairs, and conducting inspections on various instruments and equipment utilized in the Diagnostic Imaging department and other institutional departments. This position requires a strong commitment to ensuring the optimal functioning of medical equipment, which is vital for patient care and safety. The Biomedical Service Engineer will troubleshoot equipment for electronic failures, replace components or modules according to manufacturer specifications, and maintain required cryogen levels for MRI units. Calibration of equipment per manufacturer specifications is essential, as is providing routine and scheduled maintenance on all equipment within specified timeframes. The engineer will also offer consultation services to hospital staff to ensure optimal service use of department equipment and will be involved in fabricating parts or units as needed. In addition to maintenance tasks, the role includes assisting management in developing and revising operating procedures for equipment, interacting with state regulatory agencies regarding radiation compliance, and providing documentation for annual state radiological inspections of x-ray producing equipment. The engineer will be expected to complete advanced OEM training to perform services for Diagnostic Imaging equipment and will conduct quality assurance reviews for all instruments and equipment. Knowledge of state and federal regulations is critical, as the engineer will interpret these guidelines and ensure compliance in all activities related to Diagnostic Imaging and various institutional equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Provides maintenance services and performs maintenance, repairs, and inspections on the instruments and equipment in the department of Diagnostic Imaging and various Institutional departments utilizing ionizing and non-ionizing radiation producing equipment.
  • Troubleshoots equipment for electronic failure and repair by replacing components or modules using manufacturer's specifications.
  • Maintains required cryogen levels for MRI units.
  • Calibrates equipment per manufacturer specifications.
  • Provides routine and scheduled maintenance on all equipment, completed accurately and within specified time.
  • Provides consultation services to hospital staff to maintain optimal service use of department equipment.
  • Fabricates parts or units per specifications or drawings.
  • Installs new or used equipment per manufacturer specifications.
  • Assists Diagnostic Imaging and Institutional management in developing and/or revising operating procedures for equipment and interacts with representatives of the state regulatory agency on Radiation in interpreting the hospitals use of equipment, procedures, and compliance.
  • Provides documentation for annual state radiological inspection of x-ray producing equipment.
  • Completes required advanced OEM training to perform service for Diagnostic Imaging equipment.
  • Provides quality assurance review for all instruments and equipment.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and interprets state and federal government regulations and guidelines.
  • Performs invasive and non-invasive x-ray beam analysis.
  • Interprets data from analysis, reviews results with radiation safety officer, and makes necessary repairs.
  • Performs quality assessments on equipment as needed/requested to ensure compliance and patient safety.
  • Makes decisions for purchase of necessary electronic parts and test equipment in consult with or in accordance with policies as set forth by the department manager.
  • Contacts vendors directly and makes arrangements for prompt and efficient delivery when necessary.
  • Negotiates best price after researching alternatives.
  • Identifies needs and makes recommendations for purchase of test equipment.
  • Prepares and maintains equipment records, reports and data.
  • Contacts the appropriate OEM for service repairs and documents service issues, service performed, equipment nomenclature and identification, service time, parts replaced, and parts and labor cost.
  • Prepares purchase orders related to necessary replacement parts and repairs.
  • Maintains schedule reports as necessary to comply with hospital, JC, state and federal requirements.
  • Enters and retrieves maintenance data from department and OEM computer database.
  • Collects and submits data monthly to ensure safety of various equipment in Diagnostic Imaging including MRI safety/screening equipment.
  • Ensures compliance with all Federal, State, and local regulatory requirements and documentation for Diagnostic Imaging and various Institutional equipment.
  • Submits documentation to the Radiation Safety Officer and various safety departments.
  • Participates in the review, negotiation, assessment and project planning of all Diagnostic Imaging and various Institutional equipment purchases.
  • Performs assessment of quotes and advises management of necessary functionality and software/hardware components.
  • Communicates with the OEM and project manager regarding questions and clarification of functionality and hardware requirements for new installations and upgrades related to existing equipment.
  • Coordinates and oversees installation of new equipment and related construction with the OEM project management team and Institutional project team.
  • Reviews all quotes and project plans to ensure all electrical and mechanical requirements meet required specifications.
  • Coordinates de-installation/sale of equipment with appropriate OEM, Radiation Safety Officer and submits required documentation to the appropriate internal departments for inventory tracking.
  • Assists other institutional departments with the purchase and installation of patient care equipment that will be utilized in MRI and verify that equipment is compatible with the MRI equipment and compliant with all MRI safety regulations and has been approved by the MRI Safety Officer.
  • Performs routine safety inspections of equipment and devices utilized in Diagnostic Imaging.
  • Certifies equipment is in the appropriate working condition upon delivery and installation.
  • Performs appropriate safety assessments and identifies equipment utilized in MRI with the appropriate MRI safety level identification prior to use or entry into the MRI area.
  • Maintains safety assessment documentation.
  • Assists the MRI Safety Officer with MRI Safety related responsibilities.
  • Performs MRI safety access tours, education and ensures appropriate access applications are received and documented in accordance to regulatory requirements.
  • Performs annual access and education audits in accordance with MRI Safety Officer recommendations and requirements.
  • Maintains required records and documentation associated with MRI access for Diagnostic Imaging and the institution.
  • Assists with MRI device/implant information and approval in the absence of the MRI Safety Officer.
  • Assists with the review, negotiation and renewal of equipment maintenance agreements and completes necessary service training and education requirements.
  • Contacts OEM to request maintenance agreement contracts and pricing.
  • Confirms inventory, serial number or ID with OEM to ensure coverage of correct equipment.
  • Negotiates pricing and coverage with OEM and department management.
  • Maintains training/education required to perform maintenance on Diagnostic Imaging equipment in accordance with the maintenance agreement.
  • Maintains positive employee, staff, and visitor relations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or directed in order to meet the goals and objectives of the department.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma required.
  • Associate Degree in related Technical field preferred.
  • Training in repair and service of biomedical and scientific related equipment preferred.
  • Five (5) years experience in the biomedical/clinical engineering field on repair and service of imaging related equipment required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Nuclear Medicine, Ultrasound, PET/CT, and Fluoroscopy equipment.
